It was an event that combined the energy of grassroots football with a powerful fundraising effort for a vital local cause.
Bringing together Elders employees from across Victoria and NSW, the match raised more than $32,000 for Can Assist Deniliquin, a volunteer-led charity supporting cancer patients in the region.
The match saw Team Victoria claim victory on the field, while Team NSW narrowly led the fundraising tally online.
Players and supporters alike embraced the evening, with many travelling from across the country to participate.
Can Assist Deniliquin member Bianca Armytage addressed the crowd during the charity auction, and dinner that followed the match.
“I just want to say a big thank you, Elders. This is absolutely amazing,” she said.
“We are just so grateful to be the recipients of tonight’s auction and all the donations that have been made.
“Living in the country throws in more challenges than what people in the city face. There is a lot of travel, and a lot of associated costs.
“Last financial year we gave out $107,000 to our local community.
“Every cent raised tonight stays here in Deniliquin to help local families. That’s what makes this event so powerful.”
The event featured former North Melbourne premiership player Anthony Stevens, who also spent three years working with Elders.
Elders Deniliquin branch manager John Fitzpatrick reflected on the town’s role in hosting the match.
“Deniliquin knows how to show up for a cause and tonight proved that,” he said last Friday.
“To see our branch, the local Rams Club, and Elders staff from across the country unite for something bigger than the game, that’s what community looks like.
“It was an honour to host this event here in our town.”
Discussions surrounding a rematch in 2026 have already started, with teams eager to tip the fundraising and scoreboard balance in their favour.
