RVs move into town
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
The invasion of Kyabram has begun.
Recreational vehicles and motorhomes from across the country are descending on Kyabram in preparation for the fourth annual Kyabram RV Country Music Corral.
Already more than 30 RVs have pulled into the Kyabram Showgrounds, with more than 200 expected for the event, which runs for four days from tomorrow until Sunday.
The influx of RVs has created an economic boom in town for the last several years, with last year alone netting $70,000 for local businesses.
This year’s corral will also coincide with the annual bush market, with large numbers expected for the town-wide event.

Tasting ‘white gold’
Victoria’s first commercial camel dairy threw open its doors to a curious public on Sunday.
Camel Milk Victoria operates out of an old Herringbone dairy on a 42-ha property on Cooma Rd, south of Kyabram.
Camel whisperers Chris and Megan Williams said they were surprised how many people turned up for the open day before a heavy storm hit.
“We didn’t know how many people to plan for, but we were hoping for 500,” Megan said.
“There would have been about 1000 people come and see us.”

Miller’s reaching brilliant heights
Miller Griffiths, 10, is on top of the world after scoring a bronze medal at the School Sports Victoria State Championships at Albert Park two weeks ago.
Competing for Kyabram P-12 in the under-10 boys high jump, Miller jumped an impressive 1.29m after working on his Fosbury Flop technique at home using his parents’ old mattress.
Miller’s father, Andrew, said his son, a former Kyabram Little Athletics member, had been practising at his own pace for the past 18 months after becoming passionate about high jump.
“He has a real determination to succeed and a competitiveness that is just great to witness,” Andrew said.
“He has the natural-born athletic skills and is a bit of an all-rounder, and we are really proud of him for his achievement.”

School reporters’ news
This week our school reporter is Chloe Payten, a grade 5 student at Tatura Primary School.
On October 11, Craig Morris, a paraplegic, came to our school to talk about safety. He talked about wearing seatbelts in the car and checking the depth of the water before diving.
On October 20, the grade 4 students went to DECA. They went to learn about bike safety and to ride bikes.
Last weekend we celebrated 25 years of the current school site at Tatura Primary School. We have done lots of activities, including drawing on terracotta tile places on the front wall of the school.

Fire risks in Campaspe: ‘Clean up’ order to 150
More than 150 Campaspe Shire properties have been issued notices to clean up their properties following inspections for fire risk.
The shire’s first prevention committee and CFA officers have conducted inspections across the municipality in the lead-up to the fire season.
Chief commissioner Doug Crow said it was important property owners acted promptly, or they would face a heavy fine under new CFA regulations.
He said this year, property owners had 14 days in which to clear their properties or face a $200 fine.
The new regulations have been introduced to ensure that property owners act responsibly to prevent the rising risk of fire across the municipality.

Daniel aiming to add more gold to his kitty
At the turn of the century, Daniel Mott will be 22 years old.
And Daniel says when the Sydney Olympics looms on to the nation’s television sets, he is one man who will be aiming to appear larger than life.
Daniel Mott is a rare Kyabram athlete who has his sights set firmly on gold in a sport in which few of his town’s folk have won accolades.
Not since gun Kyabram sprinter Graeme Johnston made headlines in the 1960s has a Kyabram track and field athlete had such a chance to make waves.
Since Daniel has been competing competitively on the athletics scene, and that has been only for one year, the strongly built Kyabram athlete has achieved a great deal in sprinting and jumping circles.

Flood scare raises tempers
The big Kyabram flood problem has erupted again.
Residents in Pettifer Estate area bounded by Lake Rd, Fenaughty, Pettifer and Michell Sts, were out at 1am on Friday trying to stall floodwaters from their properties.
Sandbags were placed in front of one home in Lake Rd to stop floodwaters swirling into the property.
Chaston St, off Lake Rd and opposite the municipal offices, was still covered in floodwaters for several hours after the downpour.
The storm again highlighted problems in the town’s notorious flood spots, where the main drainage pipe runs on the southern side of the town.

300 at National Party rally
Three hundred people packed the Methodist Hall at Kyabram last Friday night to support the opposition parties’ action on Canberra.
It was the largest political rally in Kyabram for many years.
After a casserole tea Mr Noel Maughan, the council president, introduced the three speakers, Mr Eddie Hann, member for Rodney, the Hon Michael Clark MLC, and Bruce Lloyd, member for Murray.
Mr Eddie Hann spoke about the success of the National Party in Victoria in reducing the burden of payment of workers’ compensation premiums from what was originally intended, and on the dairying crisis.
Mr Michael Clark explained the effect of the redistribution of Legislative Council Province boundaries and on the European carp menace.

‘Third time lucky’ for cricket start
Cricket gets under way tomorrow (hopefully weather permits) and last year’s premier Tongala again looks the team to beat.
After the first two scheduled one-day games were declared washouts, players are anxiously looking forward to a belated start of the season.
Tongala, with any amount of players to choose from, will be at home to Kyabram.
The only player missing from the reigning premier’s lineup is opening batsman Gary Wallis, who will be playing in the Goulburn Murray zone team at Shepparton.
And although Tongala’s star players in Maurie Varcoe, Max Hine, Joh Wallis, Paul Rowe, Ian McGregor, Geoff Vick etc aren’t getting any younger, they still form the nucleus of a top side and should prove too strong for Kyabram.
