Dress display to impress
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
Wedding dresses may not always be for ever.
But Isobel Harvie’s newest exhibit is most certainly timeless.
More than 100 wedding dresses and bridesmaid gowns stretching back more than 100 years will be on display at the Kyabram Town Hall this month in the biggest, and quite possibly only, display of its kind in Victoria.
Stretching from the Edwardian era of the 1900s through to the swinging 1920s, all the way to this year, Ms Harvie’s newest display is the culmination of months of work and is set to completely transform the hall from Monday.

190 years of fighting fires
Some 190 years of collective experience was celebrated at Kyabram Fire Brigade’s annual meeting in December.
Eight members received services awards on the night, including Chris Espagne and Megan Davies (five years), Kim Morrison (10 years), Wayne Peterson (15 years), Phil Cooper (25 years), Max Webster (35 years), Brian Treloar (40 years) and Allan Weeks (55 years).
CFA District 20 operations manager Peter Taylor presented the service awards, as well as honouring Captain Mick Crompton, First Lieutenant Wayne Stagg and member Phil Cooper with National Medals for 15 years or more of diligent service.
Mr Crompton said having eight members receive service awards was a tremendous effort for the organisation, and that while some members may be getting a little long in the tooth, it was pleasing to see an influx of younger volunteers joining the brigade and securing its future.

Jean teeing off with men
Former Kyabram girl Lisa Jean got off to a flying start yesterday as she attempts to breakthrough golf’s glass ceiling at Huntingdale by becoming the first woman to contest the men’s Victorian PGA Championship.
Jean, 34, earned her position in the field after winning last year’s Victorian club championship.
‘‘I’m the only girl in the field, so it’s an unusual position,’’ Jean, who works as the golf operations manager at Horsham Golf Club, said before her round.
“It’s never happened before.”

Fauna park shelter goes up
Kyabram Apex Club members have had their weekends full of hard work of late with the construction of a shelter in John Pilley Reserve in front of the Kyabram Fauna Park.
Money for the shelter’s construction was raised during various fundraising activities in the past year.
Several years ago the club also spent $5000 on playground equipment in the reserve, so the club is continuing its commitment to improving the fauna park’s facilities for the public and visitors.
The shelter project will take several weekends to complete, with the concrete laid last weekend.

Stanhope to Atlanta
Stanhope Primary School students will ‘Walk to Atlanta’ for the Olympics being held later this year.
Walk to Atlanta is a 36,300 km project that will take the next five months.
The students will actually walk around the school grounds and the nearby Stanhope football oval.
In their minds they will be walking overland through Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Japan, Alaska, Canada and on to the US city of Atlanta.

All set for cricket centenary
Kyabram Cricket Club’s centenary celebrations this weekend will feature memorabilia displays.
Mensland in Allan St has given the club a window for one of the displays this week and the other will be a feature at the Wilf Cox Complex, where the celebrations will rage this weekend.
The club will still welcome anyone who may have club memorabilia that could enhance the displays and can do so by contacting club secretary Tim Purdey at Morrison and Sawers.
One piece of the club’s early history has been unearthed at an Echuca secondhand shop.
It is from one of the club’s golden periods in the early 20th century when the club claimed the Challenge Cup permanently after three successive wins from 1910 to 1912.

A case of first in, best ...
First in, best dressed ... that’s the situation for Kyabram’s 1876 dinner to be held on March 5 to coincide with the Back to Centenary Celebrations.
It is anticipated the dinner will be a sell-out and bookings are being limited to 10 seats per person.
Mavis Beck and John Pillev were pictured at the weekend executing a light fandango in preparation for the dinner.

... A cool surprise
Members of Kyabram’s Senior Citizens Club are ‘playing it cool’ this summer ... all because of the generosity of the Kyabram Rotary Club.
Members of the club were a little concerned how they were going to meet the cost of a new air conditioning unit in the clubrooms, which was installed about six weeks ago at a cost of $1150.
But last week all the worries finished when the secretary of the Kyabram Rotary Club, Mr Arthur Pollard, presented the secretary of the Kyabram Senior Citizens Club, Mrs M. Anderson, with a cheque.
“I didn’t have my glasses on and thought it was $150 at the time but when I checked it later it was for $1150.10 — the cost of installing the unit. You could have knocked me down with a feather,” Mrs Anderson said.

Valley View bowls team in grand final
In a tension-packed finish to the semi-final against Shepparton last Saturday at Merrigum, Valley View ‘A’ grade bowlers really earned their berth in the grand final.
Playing against the same team they they had defeated by one shot the previous Saturday, Valley View found themselves all square on the card with Ray Crow’s rink still to play the last end against Jack Lawton and his wily crew.
When the skippers changed ends Valley View fancied they held two shots whilst Jack was fairly sure that his team might hold shot.
To make sure, Jack attempted to drive out the suspect bowl but missed on both occasions.
Ray, frightened of upsetting the head and giving away a crucial shot, played a tentative bowl, which didn’t alter the position.
