More than 350 students in Years 3 to 6 braved 40°C temperatures yesterday for a glimpse of some North Melbourne Football Club stars.
Students from Kyabram P-12, St Augustine’s, Stanhope Primary and Girgarre Primary filled the P-12 College junior oval for the AFL Auskick Carnival organised by AFL Goulburn Murray, with plenty donning their best North Melbourne gear to grab a signature from the players.
Big names who rocked upon the day included full-forward Drew Petrie, small forward Lindsay Thomas, midfielder Daniel Wells, forward Majak Daw, midfielder Ben Cunnington, experienced rookie Farren Ray and forward Aaron Black.
The players engaged in a round-robin style carnival of football games, including tackling practise, goal kicking, handballing and other ball skills.

Rodeo set to be better than ever
Bigger screens, better bars and more entertaining events than ever are set for the 71st annual Kyabram Rodeo next week.
Big crowds are once again expected at the Kyabram Showgrounds for the event on March 11, with Kyabram Agricultural, Horticultural and Pastoral Society secretary Janelle McDonald excited about how preparations are going.
Mrs McDonald said attendees at this year’s rodeo could expect a range of new and lively events, with the show set to be bigger and better than ever.
‘‘The guys behind the rodeo have been putting a lot of work on the grounds and into making the show even better than last year’s,’’ she said.

Off to uni at 68
The old adage “You are never too old to learn” is certainly true in the case of Kyabram’s Marie Stack.
Marie turns 68 this year, and she is about to embark on her tertiary career, undertaking a Bachelor of Arts course at the University of Melbourne.
Marie completed her VCE studies at St Joseph’s Secondary College in Echuca last year after taking up an interest to learn Italian.
Several years ago, Marie joined a group learning Italian and then continued at St Augustine’s College in Kyabram, where her daughter, Mary, is principal.
Marie said she had always wanted to learn Italian from her time years ago studying opera, but hadn’t intended to do VCE studies — “it all just fell into place.”
Born in England, Marie left school at the age of 14, after being evacuated in the World War II.

Pat’s on the TV beat ...
Could Senior Constable Pat Storer of the Kyabram Police become the next Australian superstar?
Pat is one of about 40 police officers from ‘O’ District (from Bendigo to Shepparton, including Kyabram) who have been chosen to work at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in March.
As part of the Nine Network’s television coverage of the big event, a documentary will be made about the country police officers who are heading to Melbourne for the big race.
Today, Pat gets his chance to attain star status when a television crew comes to town to film Pat’s day on the beat in Kyabram.

What a day (and night) it was
“Amazing ... surpassed all my expectations” were the comments of the Mayor of Kyabram, Cr Kevin Andrews, discussing the celebration of the town’s 100th birthday last Saturday.
The Beating of the Bounds and the proclamation day banquet, the two functions arranged by the Kyabram Historical Society to acknowledge the magical milestone, were outstandingly successful events.
“If today has been any indication of what is to come in the next few weeks, then the success of the celebrations is assured”, Cr Andrews said at the Proclamation Day Banquet on Saturday night.
The involvement of the townspeople in both the Beating of the Bounds and the banquet surpassed all expectations of the organisers.
