The Victorian Government is investing in fishing platforms, improving river habitats and supporting research to protect native fish, giving locals more reasons to cast a line.
The Victorian Fisheries Authority will receive over $150,000 to monitor native fish populations in the Goulburn River, helping fishers identify the best areas for a successful catch.
At the same time, the Australian Trout Foundation has been awarded $220,000 to establish a Macquarie perch refuge at Loombah Weir.
Juvenile fish grown in the refuge will be relocated to strengthen existing populations or create new ones, protecting this iconic species.
“Fishing is an important part of life in northern Victoria, and this program gives locals more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors while protecting our native fish,” state Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.
These initiatives are part of 20 projects sharing more than $2 million through the Recreational Fishing Grants Program.
