The water authority has permanently removed the skip bin from the popular Waranga Basin recreation area due to ongoing illegal dumping and excessive rubbish.
G-MW manager storage operations south Paul Beard said the decision to remove the bin was made in response to “constant” illegal dumping over the summer.
“Illegal dumping has always been an issue at the bin, but since November last year there has been a noticeable uptick in household items being dumped there,” he said.
“Staff have seen items such as bikes, fridges, carpet, televisions, white goods and electronic goods dumped in the bin.”
Waranga Basin has a ‘carry-in, carry-out’ policy, asking visitors to take home any rubbish they bring to the facilities.
The illegal dumping has created extra work for site staff who must remove the items, while overflowing bins spilled rubbish out into the environment.
The rubbish bin was placed at Harriman's Point as a trial for visitors' general waste, but with its removal the carry-in, carry-out policy will return completely.
Responding to speculation that G-MW might close the site due to illegal dumping, Mr Beard firmly dismissed those rumours.
“G-MW is not closing Harriman’s Point,” he said.
“We will continue to work with community members and visitors around matters at the site, including taking rubbish home when visiting the location.”
