With the cry of a kookaburra to the tune of Home Among the Gum Trees, Campaspe’s town crier Judy Campbell kicked off Kyvalley’s Australia Day festivities in true Australian fashion.

Kyvalley hall played host to a feast fit for Australian kings on January 26, with volunteers providing a spread of barbecue classics and scrumptious desserts — pavlova and jelly slice, of course — devoured by the Aussie revellers that filled 10 tables.
Following second helpings of dessert, the familiar strains of Home Among the Gum Trees marked the start of official proceedings.
Community members joined in the dances, including the kangaroo hop and old rocking chair, all expertly led by the charismatic Ms Campbell.
Following the kookaburra cry, she stood up to formally pronounce the opening of Kyvalley’s Australia Day celebration.
“We welcome visitors to our picturesque Kyvalley region within the Campaspe Shire,” Ms Campbell said.
“We trust you to relax and experience the splendour that surrounds us every day — the jewel that is Kyvalley awaits.”
With the audience energised, guests took centre stage to address the gathering, including Campaspe Shire Mayor Daniel Mackrell, Cr John Zobec and state Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh.
Kyvalley residents Bev Argus and Connell Baldwin were also chosen to speak at the ceremony about their families’ strong ties to the area and their experiences growing up in Kyvalley.
Kyvalley Hall president Bev Williams read their speech while they stood next to her, as they were unable to hold back the tears.
Following the ceremony, guests were invited to continue the celebrations at the Kyvalley pool just across the road, providing welcome relief from the increasingly intense summer heat.
Journalist Jemma Jones was at the event on Monday afternoon, capturing all the Australia Day fun.
