AUSactive’s national Million Moves campaign officially kicked off in Shepparton on Tuesday, September 1, encouraging people to build more movement into their everyday lives.
The campaign comes as AUSactive data shows 61 per cent of adults in Greater Shepparton are classified as overweight or obese.
AUSactive chief executive Ken Griffin said Million Moves was designed to make exercise less intimidating for people who might not know where to start.
“You don’t need to run a marathon or become a gym junkie. Grab your nan, kids, mates, workmates — even the dog,” he said.
“Walk. Swim. Lift. Dance. Garden. One minute is one move, and every move matters.”
“Australia can’t afford to stand still.”
Residents do not have to look far for ways to get involved, with a range of free local activities available throughout the challenge.
These include gym sessions, walking groups, Pilates, body balance and selected pool access at Aquamoves.
AUSactive general manager Chris Alexander said the program was about helping people make small changes that could have a lasting impact.
“Little things can add up ... it’s all about helping people have a better quality of life,” he said.

Research by Murdoch University found 55 per cent of participants from last year’s campaign were still moving three months later.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said the challenge was an opportunity to get the whole community involved.
“Being selected to host the national launch gives Greater Shepparton an exciting opportunity to lead the challenge and get our community moving together,” he said.
