The baton isn’t straying far though, having been taken up by long time Legatee Graeme James who just happens to be Gwen’s husband.
About 60 people were in attendance for Legacy’s annual changeover lunch at the Ky Club, where new member Evelyn Cunningham was welcomed into the fold.
Volunteer pilot Peter George, who is a Kyabram accountant with M+S Group Accounting for much of the week, did an excellent job as the guest speaker.
He flies for Angel Flight and piloted one of the planes that did a fly-over of Memorial Gardens on Anzac Day.
Angel Flight is a charity that co-ordinates free non-emergency flights to assist country people to access specialist medical treatment. He doesn’t get paid for his flights – and although he can claim fuel from the charity, he foots all the bills for the maintenance and management of his four-seat Cirrus aircraft.
In her last address as chair, Gwen said she was very proud to have been in a leadership role over the last couple of years.
“The love, support and nurturing of all the Legatees is wonderful, and the way everyone goes about taking care of their widows is a credit to them,” she said.
She also acknowledged the loss of Legatee David Bell, and described him as a dedicated member and great mentor.
“A beautiful heart at rest,” she said.
Ian and Julie Purdey, who have this year moved to Melbourne, were also thanked for their contributions to the group.
Gwen confirmed the office bearers for 2019 and highlighted growing support for the annual Lone Pine services.
Legacy continues to be well supported by the general public along with service and business groups.
All funds raised go directly to the welfare of widows.
