Coffee brings friendships and story sharing

Know your people: Melissa and the two Jens deliver fine food and coffee in the family-style atmosphere that is so cherished by their regulars, who they know extremely well.

Jen Pyke and the team at Jen’s Cafe have a distinct advantage when it comes to running a coffee shop in Kyabram — they know their customers.

Quite often they will know not only their coffee orders, but their life story and have an understanding of what is happening in their lives. It’s a spin-off of the customer service and interaction that is a feature of the service offered by the coffee shop business which Jen opened seven-and-a-half years ago.

“In that time we have managed to make some lifelong friends, with many people from Kyabram and surrounding communities coming in for a coffee and something to eat,” Jen said.

“I am fortunate enough to have my daughter-in-law, Melissa, making wonderful coffee for our customers and most of the time she has got their coffee ready before they finish their order.”

She said the Kyabram coffee community was very much based around friendship and story sharing.

“We find most people love to catch up for coffee and a chat in the mornings. We have many exercise groups who pop in for their weekly coffee catch-up after their session,” she said.

The clockwork-like schedule of coffee drinkers at the shop has allowed Jen and her team to develop a long and impressive list of coffee regulars, who are just an extension of the family-feel offered to them by the staff.

Jen said while her business was a traditional coffee shop, it had remained abreast of all the latest in coffee quirks, offering all types of milk to cover all dietary requirements.

“Every day is a special day at the cafe and we love seeing all of our wonderful customers. We are open from 5am and are available to make coffees for that trip to work from Monday right through to Friday,” she said.
