The LOOP OOSH is the first out of school care program to join in the Campaspe area.
Sharelle Dickerson, education leader of The LOOP, said the program desperately wanted to be a part of this exciting new movement.
“We found that we already had a lot of healthy options, but it’s been great to continue improving our practice and providing children with a quality menu,” Ms Dickerson said.
Healthy bodies and minds: A new VIc Kids Eat Well program has been a popular addition for educational leader Sharelle Dickerson, incluson support officer Mary Krestas and educator Kate Ranson, along with children from The LOOP OOSH at Kyabram.
Vic Kids Eat Well is open to all schools, after-school care programs, sporting clubs, recreation facilities and council-operated facilities.
The movement encourages organisations to take simple, achievable steps to adopt healthy changes.
These healthy swaps can include giving fruit and vegetables the chance to shine on a canteen menu or offering healthier snacks and water instead of chocolate, lollies or sugary drinks.
This new initiative is supported by the Victorian Government and is delivered by Cancer Council Victoria, in partnership with Nutrition Australia.
Cancer Council Victoria Achievement Program head Tope Adepoyibi said healthy eating fuels activated minds and bodies.
“Kids who eat healthy foods regularly can be more alert and interested in activities, which improves their concentration, memory and learning,” she said.
“Vic Kids Eat Well is a simple initiative that provides the motivation, engagement and support organisations needs to make a healthy switch, so our kids can grow and thrive.”
Organisations that join Vic Kids Eat Well will be linked with a dedicated health promoter, who will help them make healthier changes to food and drinks in their setting and provide resources and tools to support their efforts.
Kyabram District Health Services’ health promotion coordinator Danae Rush is trained and ready to help organisations plan and assist with improvements to their canteens and menus.
