The ‘Brief but Brilliant’ workshop hones in on the art of writing short stories with the help of award-winning contemporary fiction author Anne Freeman.
Last year, Ms Freeman was invited to create a workshop to run alongside the Borondara Open Short Story Contest and is now bringing the same workshop to Echuca.
Ms Freeman said the workshop has received positive feedback from past participants.
“I've run (the workshop) a few times around the place, and they've been booking out,” she said.
“That tells me that there's an enormous appetite for short story telling, short story writing and short story reading which is really heartening.
“I had a particular participant say to me that it was more informative than her entire creative writing degree at uni.”
Ms Freeman has been part of the writing world for almost a decade now, after putting her sales and marketing career on hold to chase her dreams.
Her debut novel Me That You See was a major success and catapulted her further into the industry.
She has since written another novel, two manuscripts and countless short stories.
As part of her workshops, Ms Freeman will discuss the power of short stories, genre conventions, narrative arcs, avoiding info dumping, crafting a satisfying ending and other basics.
She will also touch on short story elements and explore different ways of creative experimentation.
Ms Freeman said running the workshops is an opportunity to give back to the writing community.
“I love contributing to the writing and reading community and imparting what wisdom I have learnt onto others who perhaps are just starting out on their journey,” she said.
“I hope that participants leave with a renewed sense of purpose. I hope that they feel confident to put the words on the page, to make connections within the community, and also to have the practical skills that will help their work.”
Ms Freeman will be hosting a session at the Kyabram library on Wednesday, September 3 from 10.30am.
