The Living Well with Diabetes Group is a free program starting Thursday, February 12, where people with type 2 diabetes can discover practical ways to maintain their health alongside others facing similar challenges.
Each week, participants gather for gentle exercise and learning sessions, where they can share their journey with others and receive guidance from diabetes specialists.
Topics covered across the eight weeks will include: understanding diabetes; getting active; healthy eating; medications; looking after feet; sleep and stress; and goal setting.
Building on two highly successful programs in Stanhope, diabetes outreach co-ordinator Melissa Wade has witnessed remarkable improvements in participants' overall health and wellbeing.
“They were more active, they had lost some weight, their blood sugar level had improved a bit and their blood pressure improved a bit,” she said.
With 20 years of experience leading these groups, Ms Wade has mastered creating a caring, supportive space where participants feel safe to share their experiences and concerns.
“The hardest thing is getting people’s foot in the door, so coming to that first session is hard for most people,” she said.
“People become more chatty as they get more comfortable.”
After eight weeks, participants feel confident and well equipped with practical knowledge to successfully manage their condition in daily life.
Ms Wade welcomes anyone living with type 2 diabetes who is interested in taking positive steps towards better health and wellbeing.
“That’s all they need to come with: a desire to make some small changes.”
