This once-in-a-generation milestone is expected to anchor Kyabram’s calendar for the year, but the question remains: what should that celebration look like?
The Kyabram Development Committee will be holding a meeting on Wednesday, January 21, to hear from community groups and representatives about how to mark the occasion.
KDC secretary Renee Pichler said the committee wanted to extend the invitation to all groups in Kyabram to share and understand each group’s goal for 2026 and begin the collaborative planning process of the celebrations.
She said the meeting came about after the Kyabram Deakin Residents and Ratepayers Development Group and the Kyabram Historical Society brought the milestone to the KDC’s attention.
“Nothing has been decided about what we’ll do — we just want to do something,” Ms Pichler said.
“We want all the stakeholders to come together and brainstorm and create together something that is going to be memorable and good for 150 years.”
She’s excited that opening the meeting to everyone will welcome newer residents to contribute their fresh perspectives and become part of Kyabram’s continuing story.
Ms Pichler has called Kyabram home for eight years, and while that's relatively recent compared to the established families around town, she feels completely embraced by the community.
She joined the KDC a few years ago because she wanted to make a difference in the community that has embraced her.
She believes this celebration offers the perfect opportunity to honour Kyabram’s remarkable history while giving well-deserved recognition to the dedicated volunteers and organisations who are the heart of our community.
“There is so much history from our community volunteers that is embedded in our history … it's part of our identity,” Ms Pichler said.
“For some of the new people coming in, like myself, I'm looking forward to hearing the stories about, the swimming pool, at the fauna park. I'm looking forward to hearing those stories and discovering them.
“(Community spirit) is what we have been built on.”
The meeting will be held at the former ANZ building on the corner of Allan and Lake Rds on Wednesday, January 21 from 6.30pm. All community groups are invited.
