Led by RCH counsellor Bern Wright, guided relaxation classes and the Rochester Carers Support Group will target the wider community and district carers.
The guided relaxation classes began on Monday, February 23, and received a positive response from the community, with 12 people attending the first session.
During the class, participants enter a quiet space where Ms Wright leads the group through an hour of breathing techniques and encourages participants to be present.
Ms Wright said the program was about people reconnecting with themselves and giving their minds and bodies a break.
“This is really about connection and the health benefits,” she said.
“When you’re relaxed ... you go into a bit of a meditative state, and that’s the idea.
“In that time, you’re giving your mind a break and your body goes into a deep, relaxed state.”
Due to its popularity, class sizes are limited to 15 participants per session but, depending on demand, the RCH may expand the program to 20 participants.
Ms Wright is also leading a carers support group for Rochester carers.
The group offers a chance for carers to connect with other carers and share their experiences over a cup of tea.
Ms Wright said during her time as a counsellor in Rochester, she had seen the need for a support group for local carers.
“Over four years, I’ve met a lot of people and I do see that there’s a gap here,” she said.
“There are other groups ... but we wanted to do something here in Rochester.
“There's a huge benefit in people having the shared experience and sharing their stories or their dealings with (the) government or health professionals.”
All carers are welcome to attend sessions for a gold coin donation, whether they are caring for a parent, child, sibling or partner.
The group meets at the Rochester Community House every month.
The next session will be held on Thursday, March 26, from 1pm to 3pm.
The guided relaxation classes are on every fortnight from 1pm to 2pm, with the next session to be held on Monday, March 23.
The class costs $5 per person and bookings can be made online at https://tinyurl.com/5bcbkp59 or by phoning the RCH on 5484 3600.
