Ken Bevan was assisted by his wife Maureen to cut the celebration cake. It was the same knife the couple used to cut their wedding cake.
An informal farewell held at the Tuppal Hotel in Finley recently gave Ken Bevan’s family, teammates and friends the opportunity to show their appreciation for his 58 years’ service with Finley Fire + Rescue NSW branch, helping to keep the local community safe.
A beautifully decorated cake with the official insignia and Ken’s name and identification number took pride of place, along with two examples of uniform helmets worn for protection during his time with the service.
John Hand gave an amazing speech on the activities Ken encountered on his journey.
“For 30 years of Ken’s involvement in the brigade he was a keen and successful member of the Finley Demo team, now Firefighter Championships.
“They were known as Demonstrations from the late 1800s. Ken was a member of the Finley ‘Giantkillers’ as they were known in the 1970s and 1980s” John said.
Current Captain Lawrence Walsh congratulated Ken on all he had achieved and, together with fellow firefighter Bernie Thomson, presented him with a special memento put together by Bernie.
At the end of festivities everyone sang Happy Birthday to Julie Thomson, who happened to be celebrating a ‘zero’ birthday on the day.
Bernie and Julie Thomson celebrated Julie's special birthday while at the luncheon for Ken Bevan.
