Students take a walk on the wild side with park program

A group of Kyabram P-12 College students has completed the semester one Junior Park Rangers program at Kyabram Fauna Park, gaining hands-on experience in animal care and conservation.

The 10-week program, run in partnership with Kyabram Fauna Park and Campaspe Cohuna LLEN, took place on Mondays during term one and two.

Students from Kyabram P-12 College collaborated with peers from Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School in various learning activities under the guidance of the park’s education team.

Based at the park’s education centre, participants spent considerable time learning directly from experienced keepers about native animal behaviour and care requirements.

A highlight of the semester was the students’ vegetable garden creation, which will support the park’s animals while promoting sustainability awareness.

“The Junior Park Rangers program is about so much more than just learning about animals,” CCLLEN project officer Cath Elms said.

“It encourages responsibility, builds confidence and helps students work together to contribute something meaningful to their community.”

The partnership between CCLLEN and Kyabram Fauna Park will continue in semester two, offering more students the opportunity to participate in the program.
