Generally, look for places where the river slows, deepens or bends, especially around fallen timber, undercut banks and shaded pockets where cod like to sit and ambush.
Yellowbelly favour warmth and gentle flow, so edges, drop‑offs and spots where the current pushes food along are always worth a cast.
Close to Denilqiuin township, Willoughby’s Beach Campground offers a natural setting by the Edward River, with some great fishing in a serene, bushland environment.
About 60km north, the Barmah Lakes Campground offers perfect fishing, with slower moving water.
About 50km northeast of Deniliquin is the Moulamein Forest Reserve, which offers a tranquil atmosphere, with scenic river views, making for some relaxed fishing.
The Koondrook-Perricoota Forest, about 90km north of Deni, also provides a fantastic natural setting for fishing, while being surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.
And located 12km from Mathoura, the Gulpa Campground is one of many in the Murray Valley National Park. Here you have access to both the Gulpa Creek and Edward River.
The Deni and district community loves its fishing, and are proactive in protecting the local waterways.
This was evidenced by yet another fingerling release this week by the team behind the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge - 30,000 yellowbelly (see page 9).
The Challenge is now just a few weeks away, so make sure to register and support the event to help fund more restocking.
Meanwhile, remember to send us your catches.
