Tongala treatment plant invaders face big fines

Under surveillance: Security will be increased at the Tongala Water Treatment Plant after a series of break-ins have caused Goulburn Valley Water to issue a warning about trespassing.

Goulburn Valley Water is urging the Tongala community to help keep an eye out for and report any intruders breaking into the Tongala Water Treatment Plant.

A recent spate of break-ins at the treatment plant and nearby water storages has prompted the call, with staff identifying unauthorised access to the plant several times a week during last month.

GVW will increase security at the site and is working with Victoria Police to monitor and identify any illegal entry.

Trespassing, intentionally damaging property or interfering with water operations or infrastructure at a GVW site can result in fines of up to $230,000.

GVW Managing Director Steve Capewell said the site was an active treatment plant and access was restricted to GVW staff. These sites were critical operational sites and were not safe for the public.

“Illegally entering our site also creates time and financial costs for our staff to assess and repair damage to fences, which means time away from other day-to-day requirements,” Dr Capewell said.
