The Shepparton Heritage Centre History Hub erected a display in the window of its Welsford St premises as a way of both celebrating and commemorating all police officers as part of Police Remembrance Day on Friday, September 29.
Damian Eyre’s photo is in the window, along with some information about his death.
The 20-year-old constable grew up in Shepparton and was shot when he went to investigate an allegedly abandoned car in South Yarra in April 1988.
His partner, Constable Steven Tynan, was also killed in the ambush.
There is also a photo of Victor Nelson in the display.
He died in 1925 after trying to drag two people out of the Goulburn River.
He died a few days later from fumes from the punt that crossed the river.
The history hub’s Barb Champion said two other local police officers had died while on duty, but the hub had not been able to find any photos of them or records of what happened to them.
The window display also included police teddy bears.
It was part of a wider display the history hub has on police, with Ms Champion saying they were attempting to collect photos of all current serving Shepparton police officers.
As part of honouring all those officers who have died, Ms Champion attended the Shepparton Police Remembrance Day service wearing items of past police uniforms.
