Following the official town ceremony on Tuesday (see page 6), Deniliquin RSL Sub-branch president John Harris and secretary Mick Morrissey visited Wednesday to talk of the day’s significance.
Both shared their own war experiences with the students, with Mr Harris having served in Vietnam and Mr Morrissey completing tours in Somalia and East Timor.
Mr Morrissey said the students already had a strong grasp of Remembrance Day, and the visit helped deepen their understanding.
“We covered topics such as the significance of the poppy, what medals mean and the importance behind them - like the Victory Medal, for instance,” he said.
“The kids are enthusiastic and want to learn, some really good questions being asked.”
Mr Harris led a hands-on session with a display of military items, inviting students to select objects like gas masks, mess tins, and canteens, which sparked curiosity and conversation.
Medals were passed around, with Mr Harris suggesting the interactive approach helped bring history to life and provide a tangible connection to the stories behind the service.
