Taking requests: Shirley, Katherine, Lindy and Jayden have thoroughly enjoyed the last week of celebrating the favourite tunes of their customers at Healthy Tummies Pantries. Fifty photographs of customers are in the front window of the Allan St business, along with their favourite song — which have been playing on repeat in the lead up to the Taste & Tunes event. Among then Slim Dusty’s Don’t leave the horse in the Long Yard and the Richmond theme song. Among the items in the window display are records from Shirley’s grandmother’s collection, including Petula Clark and Shirley Bassey. There is a guitar, a clarinet and a tribute to the edible component of the soon-to-be re-scheduled event.
Music fanatic: Catharina Sudholz from Catharina’s Vintage Stitches is mad about music, the three window displays for the Taste & Tunes event featuring a juke box, a violin and a unique piece of art put together by herself and artist friend Kim Oliver. Being a craft shop they were always going to go the extra yard, but the one-off art piece created by the pair is made up of 20 albums with pearl ended pins holding them in place as the hair for the Diana Ross look-a-like. Also included is part of Catharina’s extensive record collection, including 78s (gramophone records). Catharina said she had eight years of keyboard lessons and the violin used to be played by her grand daughter.
Rock star looks: Tes and Lee from Horsfalls Optometrists took on the rock star persona to promote their window display for the Taste & Tunes promotional competition. Eyewear has always been a major part of the rock star world, from Roy Orbison to John Lennon, Lenny Kravitz to Bob Dylan — along with of course, the most famous of them all, Elton John.
Window of memories: Sheryl Hatch has put her heart and soul into the Taste & Tunes window display at Workwear Connect, which featurs a unique suit case “beat box’’ that was bought at a hanging rock car show and is part of a tribute to her late father-in-law Neville. The stereos now lives in the back of her 1977 hatchback Torana. The window features many items from Neville’s home. He was a long-time television technician, and would have fixed not only TVs, but stereos and the like. Most of them are in working order and other items are vintage cordial bottles, a Commercial Hotel stubby holder and Neville’s old car blanket.
Look at me, I'm Justin B: Justin and Fiona Barnett as Danny and Sandy from Greece, while the Walker Real Estate Group also stood in for the Village People in the window display. Katelyn Gentle teamed up with Megan Fawcett and Simone Cerrone to put the window together, which immediately brings a smile to the face of most “window shoppers’’, and also featured wine bottles, crackers and cheese.
Flowers everywhere: The Cowsills 1967 hit Flowers in her Hair will be on repeat at Fab Flowers this week in the lead up to the Allan St celebration of food and music. The window display features lighting, a model wearing headphones and a bottle of Prosecco. When the Taste & Tunes event goes ahead the business is planning to stay open late and play the floral tribute tune on repeat.
Bugle boy: Generally noises coming from the back of Kyabram Motorcycles and Mowers are limited to roaring engines, but with the Taste & Tunes celebration, the spanners and overalls were replaced with bugles, a historic turntable, a tambourine and guitar in the front window of the business. Ryan Cossens admitted to having no musical ability, but was more than willing to celebrate the event — which has been postponed due to the flooding events in the region.
Curnow in concert: McConnell First National Real Estate’s Chloe Chiswell was working busily on the window display at the business when we caught her in action. The business has a strong musical connection, with one staff member’s son a guitarist and Tom Curnow is a gifted pianist. He has played for the staff members on request before, but has not committed to being part of the line-up for the Taste & Tunes event. Staff told the story of a national awards night when he sat a grand piano in the lobby of a hotel for an impromptu concert.
Business busker: Trevor Bassett, from Allan Street's Wealth Solution Partners, became an instant piano accordian expert for this photo. The window features several albums and a selection of musical instruments, the records belonging mainly to Denise Partridge. Trevor said there were no musically talented members on staff, although he did manage a couple of notes on the piano accordion. The eclectic record collection included the albums of Elton John, the Beach Boys, Herman’s Hermits and even Leo Sayer.
Lighting up: Luca Solutions is relying on the wide smile of Emma Squires to promote its Taste & Tunes window, which is one of 18 businesses that have become involved in a competition which carries as its major prize a $1500 Kyabram Free Press advertising package. The Allan St acounting business will have a disco light lighting up its window in the lead up to the soon to be re-scheduled Taste & Tunes event, while Kamahl, The Seekers and a variety of other records are on display with the keyboards and turntable.
Kathy Roudis was quick to explain, when it came to music, George was the more "tuned in'' member of the GV Cafe business. The couple will honour their pledge of providing some special offerings for the Taste & Tunes event when it is officially re-scheduled.
Spirited Flame Taste & Tunes entry: For your vote to count in the window competition readers need to 'like' the photo on the Taste & Tunes Facebook post. Comments will not be votes, but people are invited to comment on the posts to tell the businesses how impressed they are. Businesses can highlight more details of their impressive work in the comments section of their photo. Voting has to be on the Kyabram Taste & Tunes post (not shares from the businesses, this original post by Kyabram Tastes and Tunes) and voting will close Friday, October 21 at 5pm due to no event going ahead on the weekend.
Terry White Pharmacy entry: Music and food are two of the most passionate things in people's lives and the Kyabram Free Press sponsored Taste & Tunes window competition reflects that passion, including the picnic style offering of the staff at the Allan St pharmacy.
Coffee king: Rocky Papalia has spent 10 years behind the counter of his Marocco Cafe business in Allan St, so many regulars will know of his passion for The King, Elvis Presley, who adorns the wheels opposite pizza oven where Rocky does much of his best work. He was in a band as a youngster, as a guitarist, but prefers to vocalise his musical offerings nowadays — limited to the likes of Blue Swede Shoes, Jailhouse Rock and Love Me Tender.
Sporting duet: Susie Bennett and Laressa Guiney in front of the Bennett's Sportspower Taste & Tunes window, which features the electric guitar that was owned by Susie's daughter Amanda. The investment, like many others parents make in their children, didn't produce a rock star as Amanda had a brief career in the school band before the guitar was put into storage. Susie's other daughter, Lauren, is a member of the Taste & Tunes organising committee and helped put the window together.
Tuned in: John Lilford has always taken an intrest in music, particularly with the talents possessed by his performer daughter Jayne. She was due to make her comeback to the stage at the Taste & Tunes event, but Kyabram, and John, will have to wait for that until a date is confirmed for the re-scheduled event. John, a director with Hinchliffe & Greed Real Estate, was on hand to be part of the window dressing competition last week at the Allan St business.
Music, food and film: Entertainment fits in nicely with the theme of the Taste & Tunes festival, which focused heavily on music and food. The Plaza Theatre committee took a more traditional approach to its window display, a fine dining setting and arch chair focused music room setting the tone for their celebration of the event.
Pink lady: There was a significant disco theme to the Teen Challenge entry in the window competition, making the most of the fashion tools at their disposal in the new and second hand clothing store. Amanda Paino donned the Pink Ladies jacket and stood alongside the black leather jacket, poking her head through glitter streamers and with a dicso ball in the background.
