This was the reason a man gave police for doing a burnout in Tatura last year.
Andrew Congdon, 27, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to driving in a dangerous manner.
Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Fiona Kennedy told the court Congdon did three circles on the road in front of a crowd of people who were egging him on and filming him in Somers Crt, Tatura, on January 26.
The court heard burnt rubber circles were left on the road by Congdon’s Holden ute.
Leading Sen Constable Kennedy said people could be heard yelling on a TikTok video of the incident.
Congdon was not picked up by police over the incident until May when police stopped him while driving the same ute.
He told police it was the first time he had done a burnout in the ute and admitted it was “stupid” but said the people gathered were egging him on.
Representing himself in court, Congdon said he was “going through a mental stage” at the time.
“I do regret all my actions. It is something I can’t take back,” Congdon said.
Congdon was fined $900 and ordered to pay $85.70 in court costs and was disqualified from driving for six months.
In sentencing Congdon, magistrate Lance Martin said doing doughnuts while a crowd was egging him on was a “serious example of dangerous driving”.
“It’s pure luck some of those people egging you on were not hit,” he said.
However, Mr Martin noted Congdon did not have any past driving history before the courts and said the “people egging you on are just as culpable” in the incident.
