A police custody officer is a sworn, non-operational employee responsible for the health, welfare, safety and supervision of people held in custody at designated police stations.
An information session for people interested in becoming a PCO will be held in Shepparton on Tuesday, October 6.
To become a PCO, the training course is just eight weeks long and you do not need to be a sworn officer to become a PCO.
You will be paid to train and learn from day one at the Victoria Police Academy.
The training (foundation course) salary is $60,164, plus penalty rates and shift allowances.
The post-training salary ranges from $62,104 to $79,753, plus penalty rates and shift allowances.
As a PCO, people also get up to five weeks of annual leave.
Shepparton Local Area Commander Cameron Sanderson said police would welcome anyone who wanted a change of pace in an exciting role that helped the community to go along to the Shepparton information session.
“While these 10 positions are available to anyone, it’s a great opportunity for Goulburn Valley locals to apply,” he said.
“They can work in their local area without the need to relocate.
“Having dedicated protective custody officers at Shepparton Police Station means more sworn officers can be out on the road responding to and deterring crime.”
Shepparton Police Station protective custody officer Trevor Simpson said his job had provided him with great opportunities to further himself and his skills.
“In previous jobs, I have been able to predict the next day, week and even month, but in this role, no two days are the same,” he said.
“Every day something different comes along.
“This job will teach you so many things.
“It’s also a great stepping stone for those who want to become a sworn member of Victoria Police in the future.
“There are so many opportunities within VicPol, once you’re here the world is endless.”
The Shepparton information session is open to anyone who wants to learn more about becoming a PCO. It will be held at 6pm on Tuesday, October 6, at the Shepparton Police Station.
