The break in the 225 mm main was reported about 6.30pm on October 13.
Coliban Water operations manager, Julian Bull, said the break occurred about two metres below the road surface.
The boil water advisory was issued on Wednesday.
A boil water advisory is a measure taken when a potential water quality issue is detected with customers’ drinking water supply.
The authority said a boil water advisory notified customers to boil their drinking water, and water used for food preparation, until they confirm the water is safe for these purposes.
“We are working closely with the Department of Health on this issue and continue to keep customers informed,” the authority said.
Repairs to the burst water main are under way.
However, the boil water advisory will remain in place until Coliban Water can confirm the water is safe to drink.
Mr Bull said he hoped the boil water alert would be lifted by Saturday. Under Department of Health requirements the Authority must produce two clear tests before the all clear was given.
To assist customers in Cohuna, Coliban Water has set up a drinking water trailer at the Bowls Club and another location in the town.
