The Coliban River Gathering Day will be held at Lauriston Common on Friday, October 9 hosted by the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, Coliban Water and North Central Catchment Management Authority.
The common is the site of the current restoration work under the A Healthy Coliban Catchment project, a community-backed plan to restore and protect key sections of the waterway.
“We’d love to see locals, visitors, farmers, community and their families join in the activities, lunch and river walk,” project manager Tess Grieves said.
“It will be a relaxed celebration of the river and the people who make it special.
“There will be interactive turtle and native fish displays, a barbecue, information displays, a lovely river walk, and we’ll also have a community clean-up of the site for those who want to get involved.”
The catchment is home to significant numbers of threatened plants and animals and is a key social, cultural and economic asset for the region.
It’s also home to three water storages, Malmsbury, Lauriston, and Upper Coliban, that supply raw water for drinking purposes to more than 130,000 people, including the towns of Trentham, Tylden, Bendigo, Kyneton and Castlemaine.
The AHCC is funded by the Victorian Government’s Our Catchments, Our Communities program, Coliban Water and the North Central CMA.
