The reigning GVL premier had to pull out all stops to haul in the Bulldogs and then establish a winning, if not decisive, margin of two goals in a hectic struggle against persistent rivals.
Golden Square kicked the first four goals of the game, and at half-time the Bombers had just one goal on the board.
They were getting on top at this stage, although it was not reflected in the scores.
In the second half, Kyabram worked hard to kick goals and finish with a two-goal buffer.
Regular senior players in Brad Whitford, Josh Dillon, Bohden Learmonth, Rhys Clarke and Jake Parkinson didn’t play but most are expected to return for this Saturday’s clash against another Bendigo League side, South Bendigo, at Bendigo.
Regular stars in ruckman Zac Norris, defender Jason Morgan and midfielder Mick Mattingly were standouts for the Bombers and the most impressive of the newcomers was Ben Railton from the reserves, who was solid in defence.
Aaron Hayes, back with the club after several years, also stood out at times in defence, while another returnee, Ruben Rhode, showed flashes of his brilliance along with Charlie Barnett, Anthony Depasquale, Jack Russell and Riley Ironside.
Oscar Dixon, in defence, turned in a solid display and under-18s talent Isaiah Scoble showed his class on a wing.
— Kyabram reserves were no match for a slicker Golden Square side and suffered a heavy loss.
