The Kyabram Weather Station recorded 15mm, which took the yearly total to 438mm and Kyabram’s August total to 70mm.
The average yearly rainfall for Kyabram is 452mm.
Temperatures have been cool over the past week, with the highest August maximum of 19°C last Sunday and the lowest minimum of -1.8°C on August 1.
We are now into September, which has an average rainfall of 40mm, but with El Niño predicted to kick in it will be interesting to see how much rain we get this month.
Man charged over dog deaths
A man has been charged over the deaths of three dogs in June near the Echuca harness racing track.
The dogs were much-loved pets Loki, Daisy and Buddy, and died from toxin poisoning.
A man apprehended by police is due to face Echuca Magistrates’ Court on December 1.
Barnes to perform at muster
Country music star Casey Barnes has joined the impressive list of entertainers who will performing at next month’s Deni Ute Muster.
The muster will be a stopover on his national tour to promote his new album, Made For This.
Barnes will perform at the muster on the Saturday night, three years after making his debut at the iconic event.
Trucks collide
Two trucks crashed head-on on the Midland Hwy near Mooroopna on August 19.
A B-double truck and a medium rigid truck slammed into each other near the Turnbull Rd intersection in wet conditions about 11am.
One of the truck drivers was trapped for about an hour and was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital. The other driver was not seriously injured but was taken to Goulburn Valley Health.
Yabby breakthrough
Some common sense has prevailed and children will now again be allowed to catch yabbies — and sell them to recreational anglers and bait and tackle stores.
The new permit trial allowing children to catch and sell freshwater yabbies for bait began on September 1 as a two-year trial running until September 1, 2028.
The Victorian Fisheries Authority is launching the initiative.
Anyone under 18 can apply for the permit free of charge, while adults must pay an annual fee of $171.46. Applications opened on September 1 through the online VFA LQMS Fisher Portal, with successful permits allowing catching operations to begin on September 11, 2026.
Permit holders can catch up to 250 yabbies per day and must log their catches.
Yabbies must be sold live and explicitly labelled as bait, not for human consumption.
Catching or keeping female yabbies with eggs or young attached is strictly forbidden.

Plants stolen
Unwanted gardeners have stolen plants from Finley High School’s newly established Indigenous garden.
The garden is just six weeks old, having been created and cultivated as part of the school’s recent NAIDOC Week celebrations.
Ned, is that you?
Simon Ruppert, a McPherson Media Group editor, encountered a strange experience recently at the Benalla Rose Gardens.
When he pulled over at the gardens to take a phone call he looked up and noticed a Ned Kelly-like shape in a hollow in the bark of a branch on a tree.
Kelly often frequented Benalla and the tree isn’t far from the Benalla courthouse where he spent a lot of time.
Big night in Numurkah
Numurkah is gearing up to stage The Big Community Night Out.
Broken Creek Connect is hosting the event on Friday, September 18, which is being funded from a grant from the National Centre for Farmers Health.
The event will acknowledge the ongoing hardship faced by the region, especially in the aftermath of the 2026 January bushfires, which caused significant losses to parts of the community.
