Hats off to David: In 35ºC heat at the Church St rinks of Kyabram Bowls Club it was David Cartwright’s nine-shot Goulburn Valley playing area Division one pennant win that helped to set up his team’s win against top-of-the-ladder Shepparton Golf.
Geoff Beattie turned from villain to hero in a three-end run that turned Kyabram’s Goulburn Valley playing area match with top-of-the-ladder Shepparton Golf on its ear and gave the Bombers their biggest win of the season.

Beattie was pitted against the number one-ranked Division one skip in the competition, Brett Foley, and after 21 ends faced a 16 shot deficit.
Kyabram, ranked second with a 7-2 win/loss record, lost to Shepparton Golf in round four by four shots and last week suffered its second loss of the season against third-ranked Tallygaroopna.
It was the Beattie’s rink of David Townsend, Paul McInnes and Robert George that turned the game on its ear and gave Kyabram an overall victory of eight shots, 90-82 (16-2).
Ironically it was Beattie’s four that were the only losers for the afternoon, despite their status as “game changers” for the afternoon.
Beattie trailed 7-23 before taking six shots on the 22nd end, another five shots on the 23rd and a single shot on the second last end to eventually lose by six.
By the time David Cartwright’s nine-shot domination of John Gribble was counted, along with Brett Reiner’s one-shot win against the competition’s previously second-ranked skip Brad Orr Kyabam had collected a lion’s share of the points.
Glenn Fields took control of the rink usually skipper by Connor Trewren and beat Brett Gunning by two shots to round out the Kyabram afternoon.
Beattie won only nine of the 25 ends in his match with Foley, while Cartwright dominated his match by winning 12 of the opening 19 ends.
Fields led from start to finish on his rink, a pair of three shot wins early allowing him a 9-1 lead. He led the game from start to finish.
Reiner scored his shots in clumps, a pair of four shot hauls on ends 10 and 12 giving him a brief advantage before he trailed by three shots after 19 ends.
He won five of the final six ends to secure the win and is now the team’s top-ranked skip, ranked sixth of the Goulburn Valley playing area’s division-one skips.
On your tail: Geoff Beattie (right) trailed the competition’s top-ranked skipper, Shepparton Golf’s Brett Foley by 16 shots with four ends of their match remaining. The Kyabram skip then collected 12 shots on three ends to have the most significant effect on Kyabram’s eventual eight-shot win.
— Noel Reddrop’s Division-two rink was the catalyst of a two-shot win for his top-of-the-ladder Kyabram team against fourth-ranked Shepparton Park.
Reddrop, now the eighth-ranked skip in second division, scored his sixth win of the season alongside Kelvin Hubble, Joe Greco and Robert Sceney. Their 14-shot win cancelled out the defeats of Phil Denham and John Hausler.
Chris Preddy did his bit with a four-shot win and now occupies the third rung of the divisional skip’s ladder.
