TONGALA continued its flying start to the Murray Football League season on the back of another goalkicking clinic from Top End recruit Darren Ewing against the visiting Barooga on Saturday.
Ewing slotted 11 goals to follow up his seven-goal debut haul the previous week against reigning premier Nathalia as the Blues romped to a 121-point win - and to the top of the ladder in a ruthless display.
Sam Cipriani with five goals also tormented the visitors at the goalmouth after Tongala had made an early statement of its supremacy with a seven goals to nil opening term.
Another of their big name new recruits Nic Jamieson also showed out again in the midfield and along with Coby McCarthy and Jack Hamnond provided a consistent stream of chances to Tongala’s forwards who were only too happy to oblige.
Corey Nexhip, Michael Pryde and Adam Lovison led a Tongala defence which was well on top all day in the dominant win.
The ease of Tongala’s victory even surprised its coach Jordan Souter who expected Barooga to rebound after a heavy opening round loss to Cobram.
‘‘It wasn’t a pretty win but we got the job done again,’’ Souter said.
Souter said the best part of the win was the contribution made by all players.
‘‘It was another really good team effort with everyone doing their bit,’’ he said.
Tongala travels to Cobram this Saturday and star midfielder and fly-in Top End player Cam Ilett will journey south to play in the game.
●Tongala reserves had another big win, not conceding a goal to their rivals while kicking 17.24 in a complete whitewash.
Riley Souter with five goals and Beau Joyce with four majors were the Blues’ major goalkickers and cashed in on the dominance of Nic Woods, Bryce Denham, Talbot Varcoe and Mark Williams who all had busy days.
●Tongala’s under 17s also had a good win, rebounding from a first round loss to finish up 25-point victors.
The Blues hit the front in the second term and controlled matters for the rest of the game.
Tristan Watson, who booted four goals, James Coulson and Levi Taylor showed the way for Tongala with plenty of support from Luke Smith, Jesse Jackman and Liam Cronin.
●Tongala Under 14s started an unbeaten day footy-wise for the club with a 35-point win.
The young Blues were in front throughout the game and got the job done with a determined display.
Hudson Kellett with three goals was an inspiring player and he received plenty of support from Max Carroll, Tyler Norman, Clayton Rossborough, Will Brennan and Leyton Webster.
