Cerrone’s double figure haul came as the back to back premiers of 2022-23 piled on 33 goals (from an almost unbelievable 63 scoring shots) and finished as 204-point winners against Violet Town.
Last year Cerrone, who is the reigning Lancaster best-and-fairest, kicked 10 majors against Girgarre and finished the year with 43 goals from 17 games.
He only failed to kick a goal in two of those games and this year, in his eight games, has already kicked 30 goals. Has also has bags of five and six to his credit this season.
Back in 2018 Cerrone kicked 63 goals from 19 games for the Wombats.
Lancaster’s inaccuracy was certainly not Cerrone’s fault, he finished with 10.1. He kicked seven while rotating in the midfield, but his last three came while being stationed in the goalsquare.
Coach Tom Davies said the behinds were spread, captain Charlie McLay kicked 4.6 and teenager Declan Hallet 3.4.
For one of the first times in his illustrious career former Goulburn Valley League champion Paul Newman took a back seat and kicked just one goal in his second game as a Lancaster player.
“Paulo played three quarters and led and marked very well. He kicked 1.2, but shared it around and gave off about eight goals,” Davies said.
Twelve Lancaster players kicked goals in the win, grand final specialist Cameron Simpson and captain McLay both kicking four goals as the Wombats kicked 20 goals to one after half time.
Simpson rotated to half forward from the midfield but did kick a couple of his goals from the midfield.
At the first break Lancaster led by just 19 points, kicking five goals from 12 scoring shots before adding 8.9 in the second term. The half time deficit was 76 points and Violet Town added just one goal for the entire second half.
Hallett, the teenage grandson of former Lancaster premiership coach Kelly Hewitt, returned to senior ranks with a three-goal haul. In round three he kicked seven goals on debut, but has only played one other game at senior level.
Fearless on-baller Nicholas Kellow was again among the best three players on the ground, while Daniel Foley’s meteoric rise as a prominent midfielder at senior level also continued.
“Danny joined us in 2022 and played a handful of senior games early on,” Davies said.
“He then went on to win best on ground medal in the reserves premiership. Last year he played some consistent reserves footy and might of come second in the best and fairest, but didn’t get an opportunity at senior level.
“This year he has had a massive preseason and really started to mature as a footballer. He has become a very good inside midfielder and is strong in the contest.”
Foley kicked two goals, Riley O’Neill chimed in with three (having not kicked a goal for the last three weeks after 10 in the first three games of the year) and Noah Sewell was again in the top half dozen contributors.
Violet Town and Girgarre sit just above bottom of the ladder, and winless, Undera after eight games. They have only won one game apiece, while Dookie’s loss to Merrigum has it sitting only one game ahead in 11th place.
Rushworth, in its return season to senior KDL ranks, has two scoreboard wins against Longwood and Undera, while it was awarded the points on a technicality against Girgarre.
