They will have their eyes glued to the TV to watch the Big Bash League cricket clash between Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.
What has caused all the excitement is that the Cooma Cricket Club has been allocated this game in the Toyota Bash for Cash competition.
This translates into the club receiving $500 for every six scored in the match.
Club players Cooper Fawcett and Jake Kelly, who made the successful application, are hopeful that with the game being held on one of the smaller grounds in the competition, it will be a high-scoring affair with plenty of sixes.
Cooper and Jake submitted a 1500-word commentary on what made Cooma stand out as a deserving club, worthy of the chance of cashing in on some big bucks.
Some of the points they raised were:
• Cooma is a small district with only a CFA station and recreation reserve and yet still manages to field six cricket teams each week (Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16s, C, B and A Grade) in the Goulburn Murray Cricket competition. This is a testament to the culture the club has built since its formation in 1897 to be family-oriented and whole-heartedly accepting of players of any skill level, race or gender.
• The club will celebrate 125 years in the 2022/23 season and is planning to improve some of the training and playing facilities to celebrate this achievement. Any money raised from the Toyota Bash for Cash will go towards necessary upgrades at the club. The club has recently re-laid its second oval wicket with a new synthetic surface.
• The ‘‘Alex Ranson Clubrooms’’ are named after a legend of the club who, aged in his late seventies, was still coaching and playing up to only two years ago and is still a driving force at club working bees.
To celebrate the evening, the Cooma players and families will hold a social function at their clubrooms on Monday night and expect every shot that clears the boundary will be celebrated wildly.
