Nick Jephson, Bailey White and Cohan Hooper were involved in all three quaifying rounds of the Under-17 division and had a significant impact in the final of the event against Sunraysia at Bendigo’s Weeroona Oval on Friday.
The Under-17 squad and the girls Under-14 team both made the final of their respective divisions, among eight teams fielded by the association in the week-long carnival.
On Thursday the Goulburn Murray’s Under-17 boys lost by five wickets to Sunraysia in the final qualifying round, but wins in the opening two rounds against Murray Valley and Bendigo allowed it safe passage into the final.
Opening batsman White finished with 99 runs in his four matches, including 38 in a 6-195 total against Bendigo in the second round.
Jephson opened the carnival with three wickets in an eight-over spell against Murray Valley and followed that up with 4-14 against Bendigo in the second round, from nine overs as a new ball bowler.
Hooper’s unbeaten 17 in the opening round came from just 21 deliveries, but his 32 (from 47 deliveries) in the final came at a vital time of the match.
He and Cohuna batsman Angus Donat came together with GM 6-81 in the 28th over. They added 49 for the seventh wicket, enabling GM to reach 141 from its 44.2 overs.

UNDER-17 FINAL
Goulburn Murray 141 (Cohan Hooper 32, Samuel Fisher 20, Angus Donat 19, Bailey White 17. Overs 44.2) d Sunraysia
– Five wickets from Bamawm Lockington United’s Sophie Good was a highlight of the week for the Under-14 girls, the five-over spell having Gisborne 5-81 in the carnival final before a late-innings recovery.
Gisborne finished with 8-166, a tally which proved beyond GM’s reach.
Earlier in the week Sienna Brennan was a key to GM’s two Under-14 girls victories, taking five wickets in the team’s two wins against Gisborne’s second side and Bendigo.
It beat Bendigo by 16 runs, with seven wickets in hand, after claiming a 75-run win against the second Gisborne team. Despite losing to the top Gisborne team in the second round, by 39 runs, the GM side still qualified for the final.
Penny Mason finished with 55 runs from her four innings, while Rochester’s Imogen Kath was twice unbeaten in the carnival and finished with 49 runs in three innings.
– Mia Elliott’s five wickets in the Under-17 girls carnival was the best return for the GM team, which lost by just one wicket to eventual finalist Cricket Shepparton.
Elliott took 4-21 from eight overs against Shepparton and struck 21 from 34 deliveries (including three boundaries) in the same match.
– Tongala’s Benny Smith produced the best bowling of the carnival for the Under-15 team when he masterminded the team’s only win of the tournament against Seymour.
After losing the toss and being sent in, GM scored 169 with BLU’s Blake Gibson (23) and Cooma’s Jim Hipwell (26 from 45 deliveries) the stars late in the innings. GM was 6-45 when Hipwell and Gibson arrived at the crease, but a 49-run stand started the recovery.
Hipwell’s brother, Bill (17 off 22 deliveries), then shared in a ninth-wicket stand of 36 with Smith (10) as GM mustered a big score. Seymour was bundled out for 87, Smith taking three of his four wickets in a single over.
Seymour was 5-86, but lost its last five wickets in the space of 10 deliveries, with BLU’s Lucas Holgate taking the last two wickets with successive deliveries.
