Fire Brigade salutes in under-16 decider

Kyabram Fire Brigade claimed the first premiership in Goulburn Murray Cricket for the 2021-22 season with its Under 16 side winning a tight contest against Echuca.

Not only was it was it back-to-back flags for the Michael Mott-coached side but it also was Echuca’s first loss for the season.

Josh Dunne, who claimed 5/15, set the scene for the Flames’ win, heading the attack that bowled Echuca out for 89 in the final played at the Moama recreation reserve.

Josh, Cohan Hooper with 2/18 off eight overs, opening bowler Nic Jephson with 1/11 off eight overs and Bailey Hutchinson with 1/3 off two overs wrapped up the Echuca innings in 37.5 overs.

After losing their first wicket with 18 runs on the board Flames opener Bailey White and Cohan steadied the innings for a time but a middle order collapse had the Flames teetering at 7/65.

Cohan was out for 14 when the score was 3/37 and Bailey fell for a top score of 25 as the Flames slipped to 7/65.

But then Tyler Norman and Shaun Doolan dug in determinedly and batted the Flames to the flag with an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 25.

Tyler was unbeaten on 16 and Shaun not out 7 when their side claimed victory.

The premiership win capped a big year for Cohen, who claimed the competition’s Under 16 Player of the Season with 404 points.
