Serving it up: Bill Macknamaras was a star in Stanhope’s Kyabram District Tennis Association premiership victory, winning his singles to love.

Kyabram fast bowler John Calley produced a stunning bowling display in the grand final of the Kyabram District Cricket Association by taking 7-9 as Tongala was bundled out for 23 in its second innings.

Tongala led by 19 runs on the first innings, but after being dismissed for the poultry total Kyabram needed only 43 runs in its second innings for victory.

Openers Loddy Micucci and Phil Tucker scored the runs to secure the victory, but the real news came with the sensational report earlier in the match of Tongala’s Frank Walsh for refusing to leave the crease on the first day’s play after being given out caught behind.

An independent tribunal was put together to hear the case.

– Swimmer Felice Arena shattered the Under 14 Victorian All Junior Swimming Association record for the 50 metres butterfly at the state championships.

He clocked 29.82 in his heat win to beat the existing record by a second and then was just outside his own record in the final. He won the same event at Under 13 level 12 months earlier.

Chris Higgins made the final of the 50 metre freestyle at Under 14 level and Trish Bowmann was an emergency for the finals of the breast stroke and butterfly finals.

– Chris Salter was named coach of the Kyabram District Football League’s interleague team, while Daryl Reid was appointed captain at Tongala (for what turned out to be a premiership year).

– Stanhope won three tennis titles in the Kyabram District Tennis Association, Bill Macknamara inspiring his teammates with a 6-0 singles win. John Gibbs also won his singles, while Sue Macknamara and Roberta Gibbs combined for a women’s doubles win.

Best clubman: Lancaster-Wyuna cricket devotee John Bentley shows off his second successive award as the major contributor to the club’s on and off-field activities.

Pat Brown and Neil Beamish won the Valley View Bowling Club’s pairs title, beating John Elborough and John Elliott.

The pairs won through the semi-finals by beating the pairings of Bob Carling-Bill Brewster and Bob Crisfield-Red Mooney.

– Girgarre Cricket Club lodged an appeal against the Kyabram District Cricket Association’s decision to give fast bowler Steve Martin a three-game suspension.

He was one of three players suspended by the executive at a tribunal hearing, the others being Ian Petherick and Scott Miller from Tatura, after umpires Norm O’Brien and David Blake reported the trio following the A grade grand final at Northern Oval.

They were involved in on-field and off-field incidents.

– Kyabram netballer Lyndsey White was selected in the Victorian Under 17 netball team, having been chosen in the Australian schoolgirls state and national teams 12 months earlier.

– John Bentley was named Lancaster-Wyuna Cricket Club’s best clubman for a second straight year, while on the ground Adam Tarr and Peter Walsh won the batting and bowling awards respectively.

Other award winners included Bob Borman and John Wyer in B grade, Scott Hearn (batting and bowling) in Under 16 and Garry Nardella in the Under 14 division.
