Ray Muller, Peter Campbell, David Gorr and Gavin Armstrong were crowned the A grade Kyabram squash champions after an on-court incident resulted in a member of the runner-up team, Ian Bickley, having seven stitches inserted into a wound when he was struck above the eye by an opponent’s racquet.

He was forced to forfeit his match with Armstrong, while Campbell beat John Hausler, Muller accounted for Bob Pate and Gorr lost his team’s only game, to Alan Hausler.
• Stanhope netballer Wendy Howells and teenage Kyabram golfer Glenda Prior tied in voting for the Kyabram Apex Club’s Sportstar of the Year June monthly award.
Howells was flying to Perth with the Victorian under-21 netball team soon after the dead heat announcement, while Prior was off to Adelaide to represent Victoria in the Australian titles junior division.
• John Bacon was named the winner of the under-15 best and fairest award for the Kyabram District Junior Football Association.
He was presented with his award by Keith Hindson, while the under-13 competition winner was John Wallis. He received his award from sponsor Wes Manton.
Bacon polled an enormous 35 votes playing with St Augustine’s, beating High School’s Greg Bowers (26) and Tongala’s Mick Souter (25). Walter Davis from Tongala polled 19 votes.
In the under-13 voting Wallis, playing for Tongala, won the award from teammate Shane Vick (16), with Wally Charles from Dawes Road and Haslem Street’s Mick Fry further back.
• Kyabram moved into the top five of the GVL competition with a 69-point win against Rochester, Peter Lyon kicking six goals in his return to football after six weeks on the sidelines.
Bob Ferguson and Peter Warburton were also stars of the win, while Tongala remained one win outside the top five after losing to sixth-ranked Tatura.
Garth Honey kicked six goals in the loss and Wayne Leppard four, as the Blues were beaten by 11 points.
1984
Kyabram High School hockey player Donna Williams was named in the Victorian under-16 squad for the national championships in Canberra.
She is the daughter of Neil and Bev Williams of Ky Valley and was the best and fairest winner for the Shepparton association in her first year of competition with the Kyabram Hockey Club.
• Wayne Leppard won an eighth Kyabram Squash Club championship in his 13th successive finals appearance, beating Les Perkins in the final.
The women’s title was won by Gail Steinfort in the final against Rosemary Britton.
Other title winners were George Briggs and Mark Dickens.
• Merrigum was on top of the Kyabram district league ladder and Girgarre was third after 12 rounds of football.
Rover Noel Healey kicked six goals for Merrigum in its 53-point win against Undera, while Sid James, Alex Dennis and Greg Pell were the Bulldogs’ best players.
Girgarre beat Murichson by 79 points, Russell Morgan kicking six goals and Gus Wallis best on ground in the victory.
Rover Peter Haby kicked five goals and took his season’s tally to 38, just ahead of Merrigum’s Sev Cortese, but well behind Avenel’s Bill Hannam (60).
• Tony Jones kicked seven goals, Mick Souter six and Barry Nexhip four as Tongala continued its brilliant form to beat Lemnos by 60 points.
Kyabram sat seventh on the ladder after Wayne Deledio kicked four goals and Stuart McKenzie three in a 25-point win against Echuca.
Mick Ryan, Shane Fitzsimmons, Jeff Berry and Paul Normington were the Bombers’ best players.
Ruckman McKenzie soon after won selection with the league team for the Winfield Championships final, which was against Geelong.
Jeff Berry was also in the team, alongside Tongala’s Jones brothers (Tony and John) and Mick Lovison.
1994
Merrigum sat second on the ladder in the Kyabram district league after 11 rounds, having beaten sixth-ranked Lancaster by 32 points on the back of big games from Michael Costa, Shane Keck and Roy Emini.
For Lancaster Ashley Vick was the best player, alongside John Hone, Trevor Goode and Darryl James.
Two weeks later Francis Ryan set the competition alight with 13 goals for the Bulldogs against Girgarre, taking his tally for the season to 52.
• Dale O’Neill, Chris Atkins and Jason Norman were all included in the Francis Bourke Legend squad that played in a round robin tournament at Echuca.
• Twelve-year-old St Augustine’s student Hayley Dunn was selected in the Victorian Primary School netball squad after being encouraged to try out by Noelene Bray.
Mrs Bray’s two daughters both made the state teams and Hayley continued the proud Kyabram history in the sport.
Another Kyabram netballer, Lyndsey White, was soon after named in the All Australian Talent Identification squad.
She represented Victoria in the under-16 national titles and earned selection in the national team. Earlier in the year she was awarded the Kyabram Apex Club-Free Press Junior Sportstar of the Year award.
• Kyabram footballer Jamie Thompson was the centre of attention in the match with Mooroopna when play was held up for 25 minutes as he was taken by ambulance to hospital with a neck injury.
He was later cleared of any spinal damage at GV Base Hospital.
2004
Kyabram sporting star Brett Deledio completed a hat-trick of All Australian selections when he was named in the team selected at the end of the national under-18 championships.
The 17-year-old was one of five Vic Country players picked in the team, including Echuca’s Ruory Kirkby, Geelong’s Jordan Lewis and Congupna’s Marcus Drum.
Kirkby’s father, Ivan, had played with Kyabram in the 1960s.
Deledio made the under-16 and under-15 teams the previous two years, but was disappointed after Vic Country lost to Vic Metro in a “golden goal’’ decider.
• Mark Reid (father of current underage star Harley) was in a Tongala team that lost to Kyabram by 57 points. Mark Adamson, today’s Stanhope coach, kicked four goals in the match and Matt Pell four.
