They includes Warange Boat Club yachting star Bill Price, all-round sportsman Greg Bowers (who had a third placing in the state 1500 metre athletics event to his credit) and Victorian junior golf title runner-up June Claney.
Netballer Wendy Howells, part of the Victorian Under-20 team, and golfer Glenda Prior (a star of the GV Country Week tournament) shared their monthly nomination and two other golfers — Graham Brown and Lorraine Gemmill — were also nominated for the award.
Kyabram Small Bore Club shooter Stuart West earned a nomination for his victory at Albert Park and Kyabram Football Club best and fairest winner Bob Ferguson won a nomination for his winter and summer sporting pursuits — also captain of Kyabram Cricket Club.
Jim Higgs’ 40 First-Class wickets for Victoria and his selection in the Australian touring team bound for England won him a nomination, along with an 11-wicket haul in a Sheffield Shield game.
Len Tennant earned recognition for his equestrian excellent, wining the Victorian Show Jumping Championship.
Tennis player Margaret Walsh, who won her fourth Goulburn Valley junior tennis title and was runner-up in the open event, was nominated for the award and Norma Sefton’s selection in the state’s open netball team earned her a gong.
Higgs was the eventual winner of the title, Apex club chairman Russ Pruden presenting him with the award. Funnily enough Higgs, at the time, was a member of the Kyabram Apex Club.
– Alex, Bob and Alf VIck were at the Goulburn Valley league opening round match between Kyabram and Echuca for a reunion of the 1958 premiership team, which was coached to victory by Tony Bull.
The trio formed the half-back line in the premiership win and watched as a sidelined coach Peter Lyon led his side to a 49-point win.
Chris Salter kicked three goals and Rod Bray was a dominant mid-fielder, but it was three goals from forward flanker John McKenzie that was widely recognised as a best-on-ground performance.
1985
Some of the great names of Kyabram sport were premiers in the seven sections of the Kyabram and District Tennis Association.
Lancaster’s Section two team included Phil Cooper, Greg Shilling and John Hausler, while Wyuna’s section three team had names like Margaret Rathbone, Noel Thompson and the Pells, Dsarrel and Cheryl.
In Section four Koyuga was the winning team, with Beth and Geoff Vistarini in the team alongside Basrry Nexhip, Fay Atkins and Irene Denham. The KLTC Section five premiership team included Stuart Crow, Damien and Kym Morvell, Graeme Elliott and Christine Goode.
Girgarre won the Section six title and among its ranks were Jason Varcoe, Matt and Tim Flanagan, while the Section seven Wyuna team had Simon Carver, Scott Cahill, Tracey and Joanne Gray among its ranks.
– Stanhope beat Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley Bowls Association A1 grade grand final to win back-to-back titles.
It was also Stanhope’s 14th premiership of the past 27 years.
In the team were Stanhope man-of-the-match Aub Downing, along with Rolo Severin, John Patterson and Norm Hadfield. Kyabram was best served by Alan Hunt, while Keith Smith was involved in the thriller of the day and Bert Bates also held up his end.
1995
Nineteen-year-old Brad Campbell went through the Goulburn Valley league’s appeals board in his return from AFL club Melbourne, forced to plead his case to join Kyabram Football Club.
Campbell played mostly with the Demons reserves, but made one senior appearance.
As a lanky 15-year-old Campbell was part of Tongala’s grand final team of 1990.
– Kyabram lawn bowlers broke a 39-year drought when they beat Stanhope in the Division one GV bowls grand final.
They beat the reigning premier and firm favourite by 21 shots, with current players Noel Reddrop, Rob Sceney, Chris Preddy and Greg Shilling all in the team. Also among the familiar names were Gino Scapin, Bob Carling and John Shaw.
It was a double celebration for the club as the Division four club also won the grand final, among that team was Neville Varcoe, Keith Hindson, a fresh-faced Paul McInnes, Tommy Hughes and Ernie Pearce.
– Ashley Brown and Brad Mueller were recognised as the club champion and batting award winners respectively at the Kyabram Cricket Club presentation.
They were given their awards by president Phil Coble, Mueller making 291 runs and Brown taking 24 wickets for the season.
2005
Greg Shilling and Noel Reddrop won the Victorian pairs championship after beating Australian representative Michael WIlkins and Brad Martin, both from the Glen Eira club.
The win entitled the pair to compete at the national championships in November.
– Kyabram District Cricket Association stalwart Graeme Chalker was awarded life membership of the organisation.
He started in the KDCA as a player with Undera, but in 1982 became involved with Kyabram Fire Brigade. At the time he was the most successful junior coach in history, winning eight flags in a 15 years.
– New Kyabram coach Mark Adamson had a dream start to his tenure with the club, kicking six goals in a 15-point win against Shepparton Swans.
Young defender Jason Morgan was best on ground in the win, with young Lancaster recruit Corey Carver and Merrigum’s Brett Scarcella also impressing.
