Jake Gascoyne is yet to be dismissed in the opening two rounds of Goulburn Murray Cricket’s A-Grade John McMahon Shield competition.
The nuggety gloveman led a mid-innings recovery for Kyabram Fire Brigade against Rochester at the Northern Oval on Saturday and at the end of day one had his second “red ink” score.
He and Cohan Hooper, who faced 19 deliveries without scoring to end the day, will resume the Fire Brigade innings on Saturday.
A two-hour rain delay to the fixture eventually saw Rochester captain Dylan Cuttriss send the home team into bat, with almost immediate results.
Fire Brigade opener Paul Newman despatched the opening delivery of the innings to the boundary (like he did last week), but that was his only scoring shot.
Miller Griffiths (24) and Brenton Campbell (44) were both run out after combining for a 66-run third-wicket stand, then Gascoyne and Rob Salter (42) continued the momentum.
Gascoyne, who was 33 not out at the end of the round-one loss to Echuca, struck three boundaries and faced 64 deliveries in the two-day format match for his unbeaten 43. He and Salter shared in a 58 run partnership, which ended not long before stumps.
