With match-ups now sorted for the first round of finals, four out of five Ky Lawn teams will appear in the finals hoping to achieve premiership glory.
GM3 Kyabram Bombers 8-74 Defeated Euroa Unicorns 2-51
In the final round the Bombers were looking to complete an undefeated regular season and secure the minor premiership with a match-up against a Euroa Unicorns side that had given them trouble earlier in the year. Again, the match-up looked like it was going to be close, with two of the first three sets going to a tiebreaker, with Marissa Hooper and Alyssa Chrsitou combining for an 8-7 victory, while Evan Cooknell and Abby Prycroft combined for a hard-fought 8-6 victory. The Bombers then took control, winning all three of the next matches to break the game open, highlighted by an 8-3 victory in the number one mixed doubles by Mitchell Cox and Marissa Hooper. From there the Bombers kept the momentum and dropped only one set for the rest of the day, with the Bombers securing their perfect mixed doubles day with Zane and Taylor Sutton combining for the biggest win of the day 8-2. In the end, the Bombers were able to grind out a dominant 23-game victory. The win secures top spot for the Bombers, who will have a match-up against second-placed Karramomus with a chance to go straight through to the grand final.
GM3 Kyabram Redbacks 6-65 defeated Tatura Custers 3-46
The Redbacks were solidified in third place on the ladder for the finals, so the final round of the season was all about gaining momentum going into the post-season. And it was the girls that led the way in the early stages of the match-up, in particular Justine McConnell was dominant on the day, securing an 8-3 victory with Susie Bennett and an 8-2 victory with Shylee Donaldson. On the men’s side, Ian Robson and Sam McConnell were able to secure an 8-3 victory to keep the Redbacks ahead. Going into the mixed doubles, sets were even, with the Redbacks holding a nine-game lead. However, the Redbacks were able to get their combinations right, securing all three sets, including an 8-3 victory for Ian Robson and Sue Carrol, an 8-5 victory for Sam McConnell and an 8-6 victory for James Shephard and Justine McConnell. This was enough for the Redbacks to secure a 19-game victory and give the team winning momentum heading into the finals where they will take on the Numurkah Penguins in an elimination final.
GM4 Open Kyabram Bombers 9-72 defeated Kyabram Redbacks 0-25
In the second GM4 Open Kyabram derby, the Redbacks were looking to finish their season with a win where the Bombers were looking to round out their preparations for finals. Perry Jackson was the standout on the day only dropping five games. He had an 8-3 victory with Cameron Heard, an 8-2 victory with Michael Argaet and an8-0 victory with Scott Hausler. Scott Hausler also only conceded five games for the day, securing an 8-3 victory with Amy Harrison and an 8-2 victory with Max Hausler. In the end the Bombers’ experience was too much for the Redbacks, who were unable to secure a set. The Bombers will now take on Karramomus in an elimination final in an attempt to defend their premiership from a year ago. The Redbacks finish the season in ninth, which was an exceptional effort, considering the team was made up of mostly of players that had not played senior tennis before.
The league will now take a week off for the Labour Day weekend as multiple clubs hold tournaments over this weekend. With the first two rounds of finals to be played on Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15, with the grand final to be played the weekend after.
