A third link in the Kyabram Football Club’s 1975 premiership chain has been broken with the passing of Allan Lyon in Bendigo on August 14.

A brother of the Bombers’ drought breaking coach Peter of that year, Allan was a hard nosed, tough utility who knew no fear.
He joined the club along with Peter in 1974 when the late Ron Auchettl was coaching the Bombers. Peter took over the coaching reins the following year when the Bombers ended a 17-year drought when they beat Euroa for the GVL premiership.
Ron Auchettl and Ian Burgess are the other deceased members of that side.
Peter said his brother was a quiet man who had been battling illness for about 18 months and was in an aged care facility at the time of his death.
‘‘He was a great family man who never asked for or expected much in life,’’ Peter said.
Allan’s funeral was held in Bendigo on Monday.
Morrison Medal hope
Is Lachie Smith Kyabram’s best chance of snaring this season’s GVL Morrison Medal?
Free Press editor Rohan Aldous put up a good case in last week’s Free Press as to why the brilliant aerialist can win the league’s most coveted individual award.
But his teammate Kaine Herbert could also be racking up the votes with his consistent season.
Herbert has averaged over 21 disposals per game and the tireless onballer has rarely missed out on being one of Kyabram’s best in all its games this season.
And by winning two of the last three McNamara Medals in the Kyabram District Football League when playing with Undera, he obviously gets noticed by umpires.
Lamont re-appointed at Cats
GVL club Mooroopna has reappointed John Lamont as coach for the 2023 season.
Assistant coach Darren Ogier has also recommitted in what is expected to be an unchanged coaching panel at the Cattery.
Mooroopna is more than pleased with Lamont’s three years at the club so far and his desire to create a culture and competitive side that is respected by all its players, supporters and rivals.
The Cats have not played finals since 2014 and whether they do and don’t this season goes down to the wire in the final home-and-away round this weekend when they need to beat hot favourite Echuca to ensure a finals spot.
Phillips’ Cheatley Medal
Lockington-Bamawm United’s Tyler Phillips has claimed the Cheatley Medal for the best-and-fairest player in the Heathcote District Football League.
In claiming the medal for a second time in as many years, Phillips was a decisive winner, polling 34 votes, 15 clear of joint runners-up, Heathcote’s Braden Patmore and North Bendigo’s Dylan Klemm.
Phillips polled in 14 of the 16 games with eight best-on-ground performances.
He is the first LBU medallist since Adrian Dohnt claimed the award in 2010.
Colbinabbin’s Jude Ryan claimed the under-18 medal while the reserves medal went to Heathcote’s Liam Edwards.
The A-grade netball also produced a back-to-back Esther Cheatley Medallist in Heathcote’s Brooke Bolton.
Ky recruiting coup
Kyabram Cricket Club has added another quality recruit to its ranks for the coming season.
Top order batsman-wicketkeeper Jayden Tucker will join Tongala teammate Adam Nunn at the Redbacks for the Cricket Shepparton season.
Another former Tongala player Darin Ohlsen is already at the club.
The Tongala trio has moved to play at a higher standard due to Tongala withdrawing its A-grade team from the Goulburn Murray Cricket competition last year.
Hay’s fifth year at Rovers
Picola Football League club Deniliquin Rovers has reappointed Alex Hay for his fifth year as coach.
Hay came up through the Rovers’ ranks and wants to continue to build on the current group of promising young players in its ranks.
Tongala’s lightning premiership
After winning just three of 12 games in the regular season, Tongala officials didn’t have super high hopes for the Goulburn Murray Junior League’s lightning premiership at the weekend.
The Blues contested division two of the 10-team competition and finished the lightning premiership unbeaten — much to the delight of everyone involved.
Pitted against Leitchville-Gunbower, one of the Echuca teams and two Moama teams, they were unbeaten in four games at the Victoria Park round robin.
They played Echuca in the last game, the winner of that match claiming the title. Tongala won the game two goals to two points in the 12-minute halves contest.
Hugo Monnich Vo played pretty well in every game, while Cruz Kreymborg kicked seven goals for the carnival and his brother Jett was also consistent in the midfield.
Jack Forde was also among the best in defence, as well as Phoenix Quinlan — who played his best game of the year.
Gold era reunion
A golden era for the Kyabram Football Club will be celebrated this weekend.
The Bombers’ reserves runners-up side of 1989 and the premiership hat-trick winning teams of 1990-’91-’92 will celebrate a 30-year milestone.
Mick Walsh was the coach in 1990 and ’91 and Jamie Munro was in charge when it completed the hat-trick in 1992.
Walsh has indicated he will be returning and Munro could also attend.
Players, officials and supporters are urged to join in the celebrations at Hurleys Hotel on Friday night at Kyabram’s must-win game against Shepparton Swans on Saturday.
Just for the record, Kyabram accounted for Rochester 14.16 to 12.7 in 1990, and Shepparton United (15.12 to 12.4) in ’91 and Shepp United again in ’92 (7.5 to 3.6).
