Now playing with league powerhouse Congupna, Mueller booted nine goals in Congupna’s runaway win over Barooga on Saturday.
His haul closed the gap on the current leader, Nathalia’s Liam Evans, to three goals.
Mueller’s haul took his tally to 67 goals, while Evans booted three against Finley to move to 70.
Mueller missed three games due to a knee injury mid-season, but with games against Deniliquin, Tongala and Cobram to come will get his chance to pinch the lead.
Nathalia has finalist Cobram and also non finalist in Echuca United and Rumbalara in the last three home and away games, so Evans will also get his chance to hold the lead.
Mueller kicked 100 goals for Congupna last year and brought up the milestone with a goal in the crucial final minutes of the grand final in which his team won by a kick to claim its first Murray league flag.

Kyabram VFL player Tony Depasquale is eligible to play with the Bombers in the upcoming Goulburn Valley League finals series.
But he faces a fight to be fit to play.
He suffered a cracked vertebrae in the Benalla game two weeks ago when playing for Kyabram and missed last Saturday’s game against Shepparton United.
But he has been told to do nothing for a couple weeks on medical advice before another scan which will reveal the healing progress of the injury.
He is hopeful of being available for the GVL finals series or deep into it.
While Depasquale’s VFL club Werribee refused him a clearance to return to his home club for its recent game against Seymour it has relented since and allowed him to pull on a Kyabram jumper for the remainder of this season.
His recent appearance with the Bombers against Benalla qualified him to play in the finals.

Murchison Cricket Club is to pad up in Goulburn Murray Cricket this season.
It will be the second stint in the GM and former Kyabram District cricket associations.
Since the amalgamation of the Kyabram and Campaspe associations in 2012-13, Murchison has fielded teams in Cricket Shepparton’s competition.
The move to the GM competition is being made according to its president Daniel Aquilina because it was a better fit for his 151-year old cub than Cricket Shepparton.
Murchison plans to field a D-grade side initially, which is a one-day format with a retirement barrier of 50 runs.
Aquilina said any cricketers interested in a game could phone him on 0417 892 275.

Euroa Football Club has been hit with a fine of $1000 for breaches of the salary cap in the 2024 season.
It also received two reprimands from three charges after admitting to the charges which included that $4000 provided by its then coach Ryan Pendlebury had been passed on to a sign-on bonus for a player no longer with the club.
The club’s executive committee was not aware of these funds, so didn’t declare them as part of CCSP requirements.
