Strong genes: Huxley Cottrell (left) is closing in on the record held by his father, Rob, at Kyabram Little Aths Centre.
In 1994 Kyabram Little Athletics begin its journey, with young fella Robert Cottrell leaving his mark by setting the U13 boys 80m Hurdle record of 10.75 seconds.

This may not sound like a significant feat, but the centre is now in their 28th year of existence and Rob’s record is still yet to be beaten.
What makes it even more special is Rob’s eldest son, Huxley, is now walking, or should we say running, in his father’s footsteps and has pulled on the runners to compete in his second year of Little Aths.
Huxley is showing his inherited athletic ability with a current PB of 12.17sec in the Under seven 60m Hurdles, only 1.19sec off the current record (held since 2004 by Ben McDonnell).
Keeping with the running theme, he is 1.15sec off the 1994 70m record, as well as within two seconds of the 100m record, held since 1995.
Huxley is also showing his strength with his PB of 14.22 metres in discus - only 1.23 m off the current record held since 1997 by Bradley Mangan.
One of the centre’s throws coaches, Siobhan Thompson (a past Kyabram athlete, record holder and state champion herself), is eagerly looking forward to seeing if Huxley can produce a throw to break the 18 year record.
With athletes competing in the 60m Hurdles and 70m last night it could be a trifecta record night for young Hux.
Watch next week’s edition of the Kyabram Free Press to see how Huxley fares in his record breaking attempts.
