Two teams sit unbeaten at the head of the table in Katandra and Waaia, but a dark horse in the race to the premiership in Katamatite has been whittling away in the background during the past few weeks.
The third-ranked Tigers completed their sixth consecutive victory at the weekend, toppling Jerilderie 10.5 (65) to 7.6 (48) to keep pace with the league’s top dogs.
A bold first quarter was the key to Katamatite’s success, kicking 5.1 to the Demons’ two points for a 29-point advantage early doors.
Jerilderie tugged and tore at the deficit, but couldn’t quite break into a lead, and the Tigers were more than happy to stay at arm’s length for the remainder of the contest and claim a crucial four points.
Mitch Ward (two goals) starred for Katamatite, while Mitch Coleman found his range inside the arc, kicking three goals in the win.
Meanwhile, Katandra’s forward line was busy during an emphatic showing against Blighty.
Mitchell Black snagged six goals, while Fletcher Paul and Henry Wedding snared four apiece as the Kats put the Redeyes to the sword, winning 24.22 (166) to 4.6 (30).
The other landslide victory of the round went to Strathmerton, which throttled Mathoura 25.12 (162) to 4.3 (27).
Around the grounds, Tungamah overturned a hefty first quarter deficit to topple Berrigan by 25 points, Picola United bested Dookie United by 10 goals, while Katunga and Tocumwal fell by eight points to Rennie and Deniliquin Rovers respectively.
On the netball courts, Katandra nearly hit a perfect ton in its outing against Blighty.
The Kats piled on 97 goals to the Redeyes’ 19 in a busy day for the scorers, followed closely by Katamatite’s 87-28 smoke show over Jerilderie.
Second-placed Dookie United also had a prolific showing from its shooters, with the Thunder recording a 70-35 win against Picola United.
Finally, Strathmerton defeated Mathoura 50-32, Tungamah beat Berrigan 58-20, Katunga outclassed Rennie 48-34, while Deni Rovers won their ninth game of the season, pushing past Tocumwal by 11 goals.
