In the first of the season’s two-day matches, Kyabram posted a respectable, but not unbeatable, 189 after winning the toss and electing to bat after overnight rain.
The Mueller brothers Cade and Kyle and Charlie McLay provided the bulk of the Kyabram total.
Opener Cade made a controlled 30 off 47 deliveries to continue his stellar start to the season.
Kyle top scored with 57 off 80 balls with six boundaries and one six, while McLay gave the total a late boost with 47 which included four fours and two sixes in a brisk knock off 37 deliveries.
Lukas Hanslow’s 20 off 23 deliveries was also a handy late contribution to the Kyabram total.
The most productive Kyabram partnership was between Kyle Mueller and teenage recruit Gus Byrne, who put on a timely 50 for the fifth wicket.
Byrne made only 11, but provided the support for Mueller.
In reply the home side reached 2-48 off 22 overs at stumps with skipper Jarrod Wakeling cracking six fours before losing his wicket to Charlie McLay.
Opener Sam Holland was bowled for a duck without scoring by Sam Langley.
Main batting hope Tyler Larkin will resume the Tigers’ innings this Saturday on nine with skipper Rhiley Lau who has yet to get off the mark.
The Redbacks will need some quick wickets when the game resumes this Saturday as their rival has some batting depth.
B-grade
Kyabram’s batters capitulated after a promising start chasing Pine Lodge’s moderate score of 111 in the game at the Kyabram Recreation Reserve.
But it still scraped a win with Alec Macguire and young Anthony Evans getting Kyabram over the line in a pulsating finish.
Openers Jason Parsons (16) and Tim Nelson (23) got Kyabram away to a good start and first drop Troy Thomson top scored with 31 off 44 deliveries in its run chase.
At one stage Kyabram was 9-107, but Macguire and Evans picked off the runs to put Kyabram in front and secure the win.
Apart from Macguire, none of Kyabram’s last eight batters made more than 10 runs.
Macguire finished with 14 not out in a gritty knock in which he faced 38 deliveries.
Earlier young paceman Anthony Evans and veteran off-spinner Alec Young ripped through the Pine Lodge batting line-up in 29.2 overs.
Evans finished with 5-35 off seven overs with all of his victims batting in the top six positions.
Young claimed 4-12 off 6.2 overs to wrap up the Pine Lodge tail.
E-grade
In E grade no play was possible in the Kyabram v Old Students clash at Kyabram’s P-12 oval due to the inclement weather.
Under-16
Kyabram had a good win over Karramomus McGrath.
Batting first, openers Flynn Burrows (25) and Rhys Parsons (19), got Kyabram away to a good start before Jack Halstead top scored with 35 off 25 balls with four fours and a six and Anthony Evans with 32 propelled Kyabram to a handy score of 5-150 off its 20 overs.
In reply the Kyabram bowlers led by Halstead with 3-2 off two overs restricted the visitors to 5-81 to pull off a big win.
