GM3 Kyabram Bombers 8-66 d Yarrawonga 2-46
The Bombers made the long road trip to Yarrawonga.
Surrounded by an International Masters Tournament being held at the world class venue the Bombers came up against one of the newest teams in the competition.
The Bombers were short two ladies, so the pressure was on Abby Prycroft who has been dominant this season.
The weekend’s match up was no different with Prycroft going undefeated.
Prycroft firstly combined with fill-in Helen Jackson who was making her debut for the Ky Lawn Tennis Club for a strong 8-5 victory.
Prycroft then shared the court with young gun Shylee Donaldson to a very impressive 8-4 victory against a more experienced combination.
Prycroft rounded out her perfect day combining with club president Greg Tarrant in the mixed doubles securing another 8-4 victory.
Tarrant was also undefeated on the day winning the two men’s doubles matches, firstly combining with Evan Cooknell for a hard-fought 8-5 victory against a strong pair.
Tarrant then combined with team captain Mitchell Cox for another hard-fought 8-5 victory.
Cox was the final undefeated player on the day as he showed his experience against a younger opponent to win a comfortable single 6-2 and then combined with Shylee Donaldson for a commanding 8-4 victory.
The match was evenly poised with four sets to go with the Bombers only holding onto a 4-game lead.
However, the Bombers were able to come home winning the final four sets to finish with a commanding 20-game victory against the competition newcomers.
The win means that the Bombers are one of only two teams to be undefeated after 5 rounds.
This comes as the Bombers this week travel to Karramomus to take on the only other undefeated side in the competition, in a showdown that will determine the early season favourite to go all the way.
GM3 Kyabram Redbacks 6-60 d Tatura Tornados 3-44
For the second week in a row the Redbacks came up against a fellow finalist from last season’s competition in what would be a tough day of competition.
The day started off with the Redbacks on the back foot with a major injury in the first set sidelining Barry Norton for the day.
We are wishing Barry Norton a speedy recovery.
Unfortunately, the Redbacks needed to forfeit the set 8-2.
However, as has been the story over the last two seasons the Redbacks’ ladies were able to claw the team back.
The Redbacks were led by Marg Haw who was the only undefeated Redback on the day.
Haw started the day combining with niece Sonya McCraw for a hard-fought 8-5 victory.
She then combined with team captain Susie Bennett for a dominant 8-2 victory showing why the Redbacks ladies are seen by many as the strongest in the division.
Haw finished off her day with a strong number one mixed doubles victory 8-4 with Jamie Cochrane.
The Bombers needed to call on the services of life member and previous star of the Kyabram Lawn Tennis Club Mark Schumann to step in for two matches.
Schumann was able to get the edge of his opponents despite the limited preparation combining with Cochrane for an 8-4 victory and Darren Woodcock for an 8-5 victory.
However, the strongest result of the day went to Susie Bennett and Sonya McCraw who managed to dish out an ever elusive 8-0 victory to really get the Redbacks back in control of the match up.
Despite dropping two of the mixed doubles the Redbacks had done enough to secure a strong 16-game victory against a proven opponent.
Since a round one loss to their sister side the Bombers the Redbacks have been untouchable making their way up to third on the ladder with a big chance to move up to second following the next round.
This week the Redbacks head to Nathalia aiming to keep the momentum going.
GM2 Euroa Back Markers 5-60 d Kyabram Bombers 6-56
A heavily depleted Bombers side made the long road trip across to last year’s grand finalist Euroa trying to keep their rise up the ladder going.
Rhiann Eddy was the standout on the day.
One of the more exciting tennis prospects in the regions went undefeated in her three sets securing an emphatic 6-1 victory in the number one ladies singles this was then backed up with another 8-1 victory in her ladies doubles match.
Eddy then rounded out her day combining with younger brother Jaxon Eddy for a hard-fought 8-7 victory in the number one mixed.
Xavier Dodos also went undefeated on the day winning his singles 6-4, Dodos then continued this momentum in his doubles match up securing an 8-5 victory.
Dodos rounded out his day with an 8-6 victory with Graeme Elliott.
Going into the final mixed doubles rubbers the Bombers were only down by three games.
However, despite winning two of the three mixed doubles sets and more sets overall on the day the Bombers were unfortunately not able to get the games required going down by a measly four games.
The loss was an effort to be proud of with the team made up of entirely fill-ins.
The loss means the Bombers drop to sixth on the ladder with a match up against the always tough Tatura Mayhems to come in the next round.
GM4 Open Tongala 8-70 d Kyabram Bombers 1-32
In a match up that was a replay of last season’s preliminary final the Bombers hosted a Tongala side that was out for revenge for the loss in last season’s finals series.
The day started strongly for the Bombers with two stars of last season’s premiership team showing their class with Rebekah Lawson and Scott Hausler with a hard-fought 8-6 victory.
However, Tongala were able to seize control following this and did not drop another set for the entire day leading to an emphatic 38-game win which will be sure to be a statement of intent to the rest of the competition.
There were some hard-fought battles on the day with Perry Jackson and Michael Argaet battling hard to only lose in a tie breaker 8-7.
The Bombers are still in the finals places currently fourth on the ladder with a match up against competition newcomers St Andrew’s to come this week.
GM4 Open Karramomus 9-72 d Kyabram Redbacks 0-12
The Redbacks heavily affected by unavailability’s amongst the entire club meant that the team was very short on the usual numbers.
However, the fill-ins mostly made up of juniors at the club represented with class and will learn a lot from the experience against a finals contender in Karramomus.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone that filled in on the day and helped to get a match up out on the park.
The Redbacks will be back at home this week looking to bounce back against the Tatura Ceasers.
The Redbacks despite the loss with a win will remain in touch of a finals berth.
