Parkland women’s golf
A chilly start that ended up being a very pleasant day for the field of 30 women who rolled up to play in the Stableford event on Tuesday, July 19.

Betty Baker (39) was a standout finishing with the best overall score of the day of 39 Stableford points to take the top spot for C-grade. Runner-up and only two behind with 37 points was another good result obtained by Jill Flanagan (29) from Rich River.
Mary Elliott (21), although absent for a couple of weeks, made a good return to win A-grade with 33 points, while Sally Powderham (23) continued her run in the winning circle to take the honours in B-grade on 34 points, followed by runner-up in Faye Roberts (26) completing her day with 31 points.
Winners of the ball competition were: J. Todd 35, I. Paynter 34, L. Newton 32, J. Gentle 32 and E. Cunningham 30.
Di Bruhn repeated her accuracy for the second week in succession to claim the jackpot on the first while nearest the pin on the 12th was taken with the second shot of Heather Gunstone’s.
The third round of the Silver Spoon was also included in the day’s play with Di Bruhn being the eligible winner.
Valley View women’s golf
With numbers impacted by injury, ill health and interstate temptations, we have postponed the ACM sponsorship until August 31 when greater numbers will be able to contest generous prizes.
On Wednesday, July 20, we had just 13 members play a Stableford event. Many of us struggled to record respectable results, but not so Janice Johnstone and Helen Emery who both returned a very respectable 36 points. Janice snuck into the winner’s circle on a countback. No one managed a nearest the pin.
On August 3, as well as contesting our Monthly Medal, we will have the final of the Silver Spoon. Four rounds of Silver Spoon events have been played so far and the winners who qualified for the play-off are Jenni Bauerle, Helen Emery, Janice Johnstone and Gill Thorsen.
We congratulate those players and wish them well for their final contest.
Parkland golf
Saturday was a mixed pairs championship at Parkland sponsored by Kyabram and District Funerals. Representing the firm were Colin and Susan Moody.

Third went to Di Day and Max Jenkins with 43 points. Fourth was another popular combination of Betty Baker and Howard Teasdale, with 42 points. Ball winners were Faye Glover/Trevor Price, Mary/Bernie Elliott, Evelyn Cunningham and Tony Potts.

The three-men Ambrose was hotly contested in Wednesday golf.

Valley View golf
A flag-winning performance from our Division 3 Pennant team headlines this week’s report with a 4-1 win from the side in the final against Cobram-Barooga at Tocumwal on Sunday.
After an undefeated run to the final Valley View went in as warm favourites and the result on the day reflected that.
Ed McQuienn got the side off to a good start with a comfortable 6 & 5 win, Miles Gould kept the momentum going with a 5 & 4 win (Ed and he both went through the pennant season undefeated) before Dylan Gallivan sealed the title with a 3 & 2 win in his match.
Ash Kuiper put the cream on the top with a 2 & 1 with Daryl Harrison just missing out on making it a clean sweep when he went down on the 18th hole.
The win was an excellent result for those five guys, along with Robin Quinn and Mick Coyne who also featured in the preliminary rounds.
With a few members away or recovering from recent vacations numbers were down for Saturday’s Par event with trophies only on offer for one grade.
A new member in Des Partington made the most of his starting 45 handicap to notch up a score of +8 which gave him a four-shot win from John Burrows and Peter Sherman who both finished with rounds of +4; JB getting the nod in the countback for runner-up.
Marlene Topp made a welcome return to form to take out the women’s event finishing even and one shot ahead of runner-up Leonie McMaster-Smith who posted -1.
Balls went to Peter Sherman with his score of +4, Kelly Cheong (square) and Alan Hausler (-2). Peter Sherman (3rd), Kelly Cheong (12th) and Ash Kuiper (15th) collected the nearest the pin trophies.
A better field for Tuesday’s Stableford event saw Pooch McHale win A-grade with 36 points from Ed McQuienn who took out the runner-up trophy with 34 points in a countback from Peter Mangan.
An in-form John Burrows was the B-grade winner with 36 points from Gavon Armstrong with 31.
Ball comp winners were Pete Mangan (34 points), Kevin Bauerle (32) and Paul Kuiper (32). Daryl Harrison took the nearest the pin prizes on both the 3rd and 15th holes.
Finally, just some clarification on last week’s report that John Neale had locked himself in the machinery shed last Friday night. It turns out that information was not correct.
The correct version of events was that he locked the shed keys in the cage inside the shed.
The version of events reported was what I understood to have transpired. To borrow a well-worn line from Yes Minister “I may have misunderstood”!
Indeed, the captain’s recap of the story at last week’s presentation was particularly difficult to make sense of.
Merrigum golf
Golfers at Merrigum played the Peter Cottrell four-person cross-country Ambrose on Saturday.
The cross-country is something a little different and always a lot of fun, although some of us think it is not too much different to how we play every Saturday. The real difference is that there are three other players to help cover our mistakes when our ambition and ability diverge, and the miraculous shots don’t come off.
One team who excelled was that of Russell Dunn, Cory Berghofer, John Fuller and Tony Borrelli, who not only had the best net score, but also posted the best scratch score, 64-8.8-55.2.
They were comprehensive winners, easily accounting for the rest of the competitors. They were more than three shots ahead of their nearest rivals after they combined well. They were also the winners of the chook shed challenge, which came as no surprise given their low score, and they also picked up two of the nearest the pins.
Ball competition winners were Greg Hall, Bruce Brown, Ash Sanders and Bill Bray who scored 65-6.4-58.6. Competition for the minor places was keen, with Rhonda Eberle, Tash Doherty, Justin Christou and Travis Hocking being next best with 58.8.
Nearest the pins were won by Simon Doherty shooting to the third green, Tony Borrelli to the fourth, James Campbell to the ninth and Cory Berghofer to the jackpot 18th.
This Saturday’s event is Stroke for the Privilege Cup and a place in the next Tiger Cup play-off.
