Saturday’s par event provided a wide range of scores from the very good to the not so good (very bad actually) with the clubhouse scoreboard showing three scores of 10 down, one of 9 down and one 11 down.
Fortunately, we do not dwell on mediocrity in this column so we will start with the day’s best score of +4 which was carded by Alan Curnow enabling him to take home the B-grade winner’s trophy.
Curnow did most of the damage on the back nine with three up, the highlight being an excellent bunker shot on the 18th to set up par.
As is often the case, he left a couple of shots out there, most noticeably on the par five eighth where he let an excellent par chance slip before making bogey but overall, it was a rock-solid round from our resident pyromaniac.
Craig Larcombe finished two shots behind Alan with +2, thanks to some good work from the tee and a lot of scrambling around the greens and he took home the B-grade runners-up trophy.
In A-grade, Gordon Mackay posted yet another win with one up from Graeme Harrison with one down.
Clare Kerr was the ladies’ winner with a score of even and she finished three shots ahead of Helen Emery, Von Morris and Sharon Harrison who all carded rounds of three down with Emery taking the count back for runner-up.
Ball comp winners were Alan Hausler and Bud Thorsen with -2, along with Von Morris, Sharon Harrison, Les Hall, Kevin Bauerle and Robin Quinn, all with -3.
Lawrie Casey won the voucher on the 15th with a centimetre perfect tee shot that just held the green on his way to a par.
B-grade’s John Neale won the only other nearest the pin trophy for the day winning the B-grade NTP ball on the third hole. The other NTP trophies on the third and 12th all stayed with the club.
Tuesday saw Geoff Squires claim the win with 34 points in a countback from Gavon Armstrong, while Graeme Harrison (33 points), Pooch McHale (32) and John Neale (32) all won balls.
The nearest the pin trophies for the day went unclaimed.
This week is the annual Cooper-Buckell 4BBB stableford event. This is one of the best golf days on our calendar and there is always a generous array of trophies up for grabs, so find a partner and get along for the 11.30am assembly with tee off at 12.15pm.
Parkland women’s golf
A stableford event was held on August 16 with 28 ladies participating and for whatever reason many scores were well below average.
The best score of the day was produced by Ina Hogeboom (21) from Merrigum with 34 stableford points taking the honours in A-grade.
Lorna Alchin (25) completed her day with 31 points to take top spot in B-grade followed by probably the most consistent player in the winning circle over recent weeks in Mary Elliott (22) who was runner-up with 30 points.
The winning score in C-grade of 32 points was obtained by the effort of Vanessa Laidlaw (35) with Di Bruhn as runner-up after a countback from Bev Howard both finishing with 31 points

Parkland golf report
There were no surprises in Saturday’s stroke event at Parkland with Darren Baird the standout golfer. Where a lot of golfers at times looked to be playing cross country, Baird played a composed game to win the men’s C-grade with a 49 net following up from last week’s success.
Playing off an 18 handicap, Baird shot a scratch score of 67. Eight shots away was Vaughan Moss with a net 57, while Don McKenzie 75-18-57 was third. Steve Piggott also played solid golf to win A-grade after a countback from Jason McKenzie.
Piggott fired 63 while McKenzie shot 62 with net 54s. B-grade was also a countback with Michael Turnbull getting the nod over Vin Sleeth with 54 nets. Turnbull had 68, while Sleeth made 71.

With the markers back on the plates for the medal round, conditions were tougher than normal for the field of 49 players for the men’s event held on Wednesday. Piggott won A-grade and the medal for the game with 65-10-55.
B-grade was won by Alan Williams with 70-14-56, while Bryan Prendergast 72-16-56 was runner-up. Steve Walsh won C-grade with 75-19-56, while Roger Gillon was next with 76-19-57.

The Doris Chambers Foursomes Stableford competition played last Wednesday enables the winners to compete in the state final at Sanctuary Lakes on October 27.
Our winners, Gill Thorsen and Julie Neale, made light work of the difficult conditions on the course at the moment, to accumulate 38 points.
They were seven points clear of runners-up Leanne Busch and Jenni Bauerle who finished on 31 points winning a countback from Clare Kerr and Wanda Hacon.
All winners were appreciative of the sponsorship of Leonie McMaster-Smith and Shirley Soares, not the least nearest the pin winners, Leanne Busch and Janice Johnstone, who won the chocolates for nearest the pins.
Tomorrow is Jewellery Day at Valley View, when visitors from district clubs will compete for the Kyabram Show Case Jewellery prizes.
Golf for Wednesday, August 31 is a novelty event.
