Valley View women’s golf
Jenni Bauerle and Leanne Busch clocked up 38 points in the Doris Chambers Foursomes last week, but you have to be in it to win it, so it will be Judy Greer and Von Morris who will represent our club at Sanctuary Lakes in November to compete in the final.
Greer and Morris, on 32 points, won the countback from Marie Watt and Robyn Curnow.
No-one landed on the 15th, but Morris had a nice shot onto the 12th, and Greer sank an impressive putt to secure a birdie.
The event was sponsored by Hurleys Bar and Bistro.
Tomorrow’s Jewellery Day will see players from around the district competing for some beautiful bracelets from Kyabram’s Showcase Jewellers.
Next week our golfers are carpooling to Rich River for our annual “bus trip”.
On Friday, September 1, we are combining with Parkland for a “Swinging for Cancer” fundraiser.

Another wintry day kept some away for this month’s par event on Saturday, while around 4pm there were a few that wished they had stayed away with (in keeping with the trend in recent par rounds) only two players finishing with a plus at the front of their score.
Peter Sherman put together the day’s best round of +4 to take out B-grade comfortably by four shots from Craig Larcombe, who finished all square.
Helen Armstrong was the other player on the right side of the ledger with +2 and she finished five shots clear of Clare Kerr and Von Morris, who both had rounds of -3, with Kerr getting the nod in the count back for runner-up.
Gordon Mackay’s score of -1 was good enough to get him across the line in A-grade, albeit in a much tighter contest with Mick Coyne and David Collins snapping at his heels one shot back with scores of -2.
Coyne got the better of Collins in the countback for runner-up and both had some success on the par threes with Collins nearest the pin on the third and Coyne the voucher on the 15th; both converting their tee shots into pars.
Trudy Denham picked up the women’s nearest the pin ball on the third but there was no damage to the 12th green from the tee.
Ball competition winners were Paul Dickens (-1), Lindsay Tatterson (-1), David Collins (-2) and Steve Usher (-3).
Earlier in the week, the man with no first name Pooch McHale claimed his third win in a row taking out Tuesday’s A-grade event with 37 points from Peter Mangan with 33.
Geoff Strachan was the B-grade winner, also with 37 points, while Craig Larcombe was the runner-up with 35 points.
Ball competition winners were Kerry Kreeck with 34 points, Kevin Bauerle (33) and Gordon Mackay (33).
Daryl Harrison picked up the A-grade nearest the pin ball on the third and the voucher on the 15th went to Mick McAuliffe.
Next week’s event is the annual Cooper-Buckle four-ball best-ball stableford event.
Phil and John have been sponsoring this day for a decade or more and always have a generous range of trophies up for grabs so make sure you have a partner and get along by 11.30am for the noon start.

Merrigum golf
The Merrigum Lions-sponsored Merrigum Golf Club’s annual men’s open 27-hole championship was played on Saturday.
It was a mixed weather day as early in the morning it was overcast but fine, but then what appeared as a light fog then turned into a misty drizzle for a short while after the 9am hit-off time.
Fortunately, it abated and apart from the cool start, it proved to be a reasonable day for golf.
One player did have is umbrella up on several occasions and when it was pointed out to him that it wasn’t raining, he said it was raining magpies.
There are couple of fairways patrolled by one particular magpie that chooses its targets very selectively, with probably three members who suffer the brunt of its attacks, and thus the umbrella was this player’s main defence.
The winner of the open championship and the A-grade 27-hole scratch event was Cory Berghofer with 124.
He put in a very solid 80 in the morning, but like so many of us, lunch was almost his undoing, having to settle for 44 on the final nine holes.
There were no surprises when the B-grade scratch winner was announced as the ever-reliable John Fuller with 134.
He was comfortably ahead of his closest challenger, unlike Berghofer, who was only two strokes clear of his nearest challenger.
The winners of the handicap events were for A and B-grade respectively: 27 holes; Clint Prygoda 108 and Andy Baxter 113.5. 18 holes; Bill Bray 73 and Craig Doherty 76 and 9 holes; Ash Sanders 34.5 and Gary Eden 36.
Nearest the pin winners were Jeff Parry on the sixth, Ash Sanders on the ninth and Andrew Wood on the 12th.
Craig Doherty won the chook shed challenge with 17 points for the seven holes.
The Merrigum Golf Club is indebted to the Merrigum Lions for the long-time and continuing support of this event.
Saturday’s event is stroke for the Privilege Cup and a place in the next Tiger Cup play-off.
