In the men’s event, Mick McAuliffe and Rod Breen put together the best score of 45 points with Breen telling the gathering at presentation that McAuliffe had been the driving force behind their win continuing his excellent recent form.
Peter Noble (looking for and finding a more consistent four-ball partner) combined with Craig Larcombe to finish two shots back taking out the runners-up trophies with 43 points in a three-way countback from Terry Bryan and Michael Pfieffer and Nigel Dow and Alan Wright.
Jan McHale and Marie Watt won the women’s with 44 points and finished three shots clear of Helen Armstrong and Wanda Hacon, runners-up with 41 points.
Balls in the ball comp went to Terry Bryan and Michael Pfeiffer (43 points), Nigel Dow and Alan Wright (43), Wayne Cowley and Will Harrison (42), Wal Byrne and Malcolm Walter (41), Pooch McHale and Lindsay Tatterson (41), David Collins and Gordon Mackay (41), Trevor Whithall and Miles Gould (41) and Robyn Curnow and Clare Tregilgas (39).
Miles Gould played the round of the day with an individual round of 75 off the stick allowing partner Trevor Whithall a stress-free round.
Mick McAuliffe, John Neale and Jan McHale picked up nearest the pin balls on the 3rd.
Mick Gallivan won the A-grade nearest the pin on the 12th, while the voucher on the 15th was claimed by Gordon Mackay.
The club extends its thanks to Phil Cooper and John Buckell for their long and generous sponsorship of this event.
Tuesday’s field yielded to the weather with no starters in the rain.
On Sunday, the pennant team fought out a tense final against Shepparton.
Unfortunately, the result did not go Valley View’s way with the team going down in a tight 3-2 result (Paul Dickens lost 3 and 2, Gordon Mackay lost 5 and 4, Mick Coyne lost 1 down, Mick McAuliffe won 4 and 2, Miles Gould won 3 and 2).
A big thanks from the club to those five gents, along with Daryl Harrison, for representing the club and taking us within a whisker of another pennant flag.

Merrigum golf
The final Saturday of winter was one of the best, brilliant sunshine and warmth in abundance for Merrigum’s stroke round, with the Privilege Cup and a place in the next Tiger Cup play-off awaiting the winner.
The lack of putting skills, or a lot of back luck, seemed to be a recurring theme among most players, with many complaining their putts ducked away from the hole at the last minute, which was a major source of frustration.
Bill Bray was the narrowest of winners with a solid, if not spectacular round of 86-13-73, one shot clear of the runner-up.
The bulk of the field were separated by only five shots, such was the closeness of the competition, with Andrew Wood finishing as the runner-up with a score of 84-10-74.
Ball competition winners: Clint Prygoda with 75 and John Fuller 76. Nearest the pins were won by Tash Doherty on both the 6th and jackpot 12th, and Simon Doherty on the 9th, while Clint Prygoda won the chook shed challenge with 10 points.
Prygoda also produced the highlight of the day (and the low-light), with an eagle three on the par five third hole. He smashed his drive nearly 300m up the middle, hit the green with his second shot which unfortunately didn’t hold, and then chipped in for a well-deserved eagle from a couple of metres off the back of the green.
The scribe doesn’t usually set out to embarrass our golfers, and their misdemeanours more often than not remain anonymous, however on this occasion one can’t show the contrast of Prygoda’s day and what might have been without identifying him. After his eagle on the longest hole on the course, he suffered the ignominy of scoring an eight on the shortest and easiest hole on the course, the par three 12th.
In fact, his total for the two par threes on the back nine was 14, and he still picked up the first ball in the ball competition.
This Saturday’s event is stableford.
Coming events: Sunday, September 10, Goulburn Murray Golf Association’s medley fourball at Merrigum. Teams can be men, women or mixed and hit-off will be at 10am. Further details next week.
