The GMGA sponsored a four-ball best-ball stableford event, with sections for mixed and men’s teams.
The winners were Marg Henney and GMGA captain Shane Halloran, with an impressive 45 points.
They jumped out of blocks quickly and had 10 points on the board after just three holes.
Their only blemish was one point on the final hole they played.
GMGA president Alex Odell and Ash Sanders were runners-up with 43 points, with Sanders picking up a few tips on driving from Odell.
In the men’s event, Noel Shields and Bill Bray were the surprised winners with 42 points.
They played with the mixed winners and were not expecting to feature at presentations after seeing the sort of score their playing partners posted.
The runners-up were Simon Doherty and Clint Prygoda, with 40 points.
Ball competition winners were Warick and Robyn Bate with 40 points, Cory Berghofer and Kerryn Pickworth with 39, Phil and Trudie Plumb with 38, and Tony Borrelli and John Fuller with 38.
In the women’s nearest the pin, Ina Hogeboom won the sixth, ninth and 12th holes. The ninth was her first shot for the day and was close to going in. Alex Odell was closest on the 14th.
Nearest the pins for the men went to Dave Roberts on the sixth, Simon Doherty on the ninth, Keith Hogeboom on the 12th and Shane Halloran on the 14th.
Once again, the Merrigum Golf Club is grateful for the support from the GMGA, particularly Alex Odell, David Roberts, Shane Halloran and our captain Ash Sanders for their work organising the day and seeing that it all ran smoothly.
Saturday’s event was par, with a smaller field than usual taking part as players saved themselves for Sunday’s event.
Bill Bray won on a countback from Andrew Wood after both players finished on -3.
Wood appeared to have the win covered after a solid first nine of +2, but par can be a fickle game, and he managed only -5 on the back nine, while Bray had -3 and square on the two nines.
Nearest-the-pins went to Sanders on the ninth and Bray on the jackpot 12th, while Wood won the chook shed challenge with +2.
The postponed Greenwood Memorial mixed Canadian will be played on Saturday.
For the men without a partner in the mixed, the event is Pinehurst.
For those unsure about what Pinehurst is, you need a partner. Both players drive and then swap balls and hit again. The best ball is then chosen, and the hole played out, with players hitting alternately.
Valley View golf
Saturday’s stableford round saw a new face on the winner’s list with young Antonio De Pasquale notching up his first win with the massive score of 42 points.
That gave De Pasquale the honours in B-grade by a six-shot margin from another young gun in Wil Harrison, who finished his round with 36 points.
Harrison’s handicap has been coming down steadily and I expect De Pasquale won’t waste much time getting his down either in what might just be a changing of the guard at Valley View.
Some more familiar faces were atop the leaderboard with a three-way countback required to separate Peter Mangan, David Collins and Graeme Harrison, who all finished with 38 points.
The countback went Mangan’s way with Collins runner-up and Harrison having to settle for a ball in the competition (though he may have played himself back into calculations as Peter Noble’s regular four-ball partner).
Another countback was required to find the women’s winner with Bev Lyon’s 35 points getting the nod from Helen Armstrong’s round of the same score.
Aside from Harrison’s ball, others went to Pooch McHale with 37 points, Peter Noble (35), Jenni Bauerle (34) and Nat McAuliffe (34).
Nearest the pin trophies went to Daryl Harrison (A-grade on the third) and Pooch McHale, who picked up the A-grade NTP on the 12th and the voucher on the 15th albeit with varying success with the putter as he made four on the 12th and birdie on the 15th.
With the course closed for green maintenance, there was no golf on Tuesday.
The club’s annual meeting is on Tuesday, September 19, at 7.30pm.
Nomination forms are available at the clubhouse for anyone wishing to nominate for the board.
The match and handicap team is always looking for new talent.

Valley View women’s golf
While the hard-working men at Valley View were coring the greens last week, the women travelled to Rich River for a stableford round.
Despite there being many more water hazards and bunkers to negotiate, some very good results were returned by the day’s winners.
Two players finished with 37 points, both in B-grade. Wanda Hacon took the winner’s trophy from Gill Thorsen on a countback and also claimed the nearest the pin.
In A-grade, Bev Lyon, with 34 points, was the winner from Sharon Harrison, who finished one shot back with 33. Marilyn West was nearest the pin.
After golf, we enjoyed lunch at Moama Bowling Club, who are the generous sponsors of our pennant shirts.
Following lunch, we shared tales of misadventure and amusement from the day’s golf. Funniest story of the day came from Clare Kerr, whose story involved, misadventures in bunkers and water hazards and the tale of the captain’s runaway buggy.
Many thanks to captain Helen Armstrong, who organised the day and provided the imaginative and amusing trophies.
Kyabram Pigeon Club
Winning bird’s average speed from 80km an hour, with P.M. Lavars from Moama first (1337-83 mpm) and Troy Schwenke from Echuca runner-up (1335-98).

GV veterans golf
Sixty-eight players contested at Merrigum Golf Club, on Monday, September 11. Two very lucky latecomers managed to sneak in after the 9.30am assembly time by appealing to the least experienced committeeman and avoiding the scrutiny of the club captain.
The volunteers at Merrigum again excelled in presenting the course in top condition.
It was suggested by some that a tree lopper could be used to advantage near some of the tees.
As always the women provided a sumptuous luncheon with the sponsorship of the Young Vets adding novelty to the prize presentations.
A-grade produced a three-way tie-break with Jack Dell of Numurkah and Mark Lepp of Mooroopna, securing the winner and runner-up positions respectively, on 36 stableford points.
B-grade winner, with the best score of the day, was Hill Top’s Jim Dean with 40 points from Peter Bullivant from Numurkah with 38.
C-grade winner was Roy Winnell from Kialla on 35 points, ahead of Shepparton’s Mario Bradaric with 34 points.
Nearest the pin was contested on the 149m ninth hole where Graham Scott (Shepparton) Richard Stockdale (Parkland) and Lindsay Tatterson (Parkland) were successful in A, B and C-grade respectively.
Ball winners, A-grade: John McHale (Valley View), Stephen Piggott (Cobram), Kelly Cheong (Rushworth), John Fuller (Merrigum), Geoff Hammill (Shepparton), Rolf Weber (Mooroopna); B-grade: Tony Papallo (Kialla), Ron Ameer (Numurkah), Ray Gourlay (Kialla), Allan Farrell (Kialla), Daryl Sheridan (Numurkah), Kevin Mead (Euroa); C-grade: Robert Smith (Parkland), Peter Giorchino (Mooroopna), Geoff Squires (Valley View), Ian Clarke (Kialla), Terry Allen (Kialla), Phil Cooper (Parkland), Lidsay Tatterson (Parkland).

This is the first round of our championship with the championship sponsored by Goulburn Murray Credit Union.
The champion in all grades is decided on the best two scores over the three rounds.
